The Iraqi prime minister is calling on residents of the embattled city of Fallujah to expel
insurgents linked to al-Qaeda who have taken control there.
In a statement read on state television on Monday, Nuri al-Maliki urged Iraqis to help
the government and the military fight terrorists to avoid an all-out battle.
The message came as hundreds of people fled Fallujah... located close to the capital,
Baghdad... as government forces have been bombarding the area in an attempt to recapture
the city. Sunni militants took over parts of Iraq's
western Anbar Province last week, after Iraq's Shia-led government invaded their protest
camp last month. The Sunni Arabs in Iraq accuse the government
of marginalizing them from society.
