Hi, I'm Horacio and I'm the Student Government President at The University of Texas at Austin.
And I'm Ugeo, the Student Government Vice President.
You are about to embark on a four-year journey of some of the most socially and academically
enriching years for your life.
UT is well known for its prestigious academic programs and ranked one of the top schools
in the nation. We are known for our world-class academics, research and out of the classroom
experiences. And with attractions such as Zilker Park, Barton Springs and the historic
6th Street, there's never a dull moment in Austin.
With all this excitement, comes temptation. While hanging out here in Austin, either on
or off campus, there a few things that we would like you to keep in mind.
First, if you choose to drink, be sure to set your limits and stick to them. It's important
to know your line when drinking alcohol. You may be surprised to learn that 1 out of every
5 UT student don't drink, and among those that do drink, choose to do it in moderation.
Something else to keep in mind is the issue of drinking and driving. Getting behind the
wheel of a car after consuming any amount of alcohol can be dangerous. The consequences
of drinking and driving are abundant and we don't want you to take any chances.
There are great transportation options available, such as taxis and the free university sponsored
e-bus, so there's no need to take the risk of drinking and driving.
What else can you do to know your line and stay safe while drinking? We have a few final
tips for you.
Eat before going out, alternate alcoholic beverages with non alcoholic beverages like
water, avoid drinking games, stay with the same group of friends when you go out, and
feel empowered if your choice is not to drink.
We hope you are excited to start your first year here at UT. There are a lot of exciting
opportunities waiting in Austin, but to take full advantage of what the university has
to offer, it's important to make responsible decisions surrounding alcohol.
So sit back, relax and check out AlcoholEdu. It will provide great information for you
to make great decisions while at UT. And remember, healthy horns play safe.
