I am Denise and I am doing the Master Managment, Economics and Consumer Studies
at Wageningen University
and I follow the specialisation Facility Management.
Currently, I am a second year student
and starting to graduate. Today I am at newDirections
where I have an appointment with Jelle van der Kluit.
newDirections is a facility management consultancy,
you can see that we are very active on a number of issues,
such as providing support at service desks and establishing facility service desks.
We help in making outsourcing choices:
should you do catering, cleaning or purification yourself, or do you have to make the choice to perform it by a facility provider?
You can see that we are very active in housing and furnishing concepts.
Together with the staff we think about
how they get the most out themselves in an ideal working environment.
We do not only invent it on paper, but we actually help with the implementation.
Can you tell us something about your current job at newDirections?
I am the facility management consultant,
so my assignments are especially in the field of organisation advice.
In particular assignments where we assist organisations in the selection
of facility activities they do themselves, want to do themselves or want to continue to do so,
if they want to outsource it, or might want to make a choice to organise it in another way with a facility provider,
such as a joint venture.
What does a day or week look like for you?
There are days that I am working in the office on internal projects,
there are days that I am working in the office on assignments which I complete for clients.
But it may very well be possible that I am one day at the clients' place, or that I am present at a clients' place in the morning
and drive somewhere else in the afternoon to work with another client.
Did your education contribute to your current job?
I learned about research skills,
but my education also provided a lot of knowledge
on management skills as well.
It helps me to to look at issues in a different way,
thus it helps me to look at the problem in a broader perspective
and find out what the real problem is
and therefore find the best solution.
It actually helped me to obtain a broader perspective on how management and organisational advice are related.
Many people study Facility Management at a university of applied science,
only the number of people choosing to study at a university is not that big,
so this gives a distinctive character if you are looking for a job.
Do you have a great tip for prospective students?
In particular the tip is,
apart from doing well in your studies of course,
to pay attention to surrounding issues,
whether it is a student association, a study association or a football club where you can perform activities.
Furthermore I think a relevant part time job or being member of a committee at an association might contribute to your development.
I think that really helps, next to attending courses and make sure you pass your exams.
Thanks for your time and having me here.
Good luck with your studies and goodbye.
