Hey folks Keith Luscher here with another Prospect & Flourish Every Day moment. I thought
I would share a simple social media etiquette tip--this is not something I read anywhere
but really just an observation of my own.
A couple years ago I was on Facebook and I came across a news story about something that
you could do if you were at a cash machine and you had an emergency and something happened--something
to the effect that if something happened and you plugged 911 in the keypad it would send
out an emergency call. I don't remember exactly what it was but I thought at the time hey,
this is useful information, I think I'll share this. So my knee-jerk reaction was to share
it.
It turned out that story was fake. It was false. I didn't find that out through someone
emailing me; I found out because someone in my Facebook network made a comment underneath
saying "Hey, you're a fool..." They didn't actually say that but basically they were
calling me out to be a fool in front of my entire network. I thought, well thanks for
bringing that to my attention; no thanks for calling me out to be an idiot in front of
everybody. And I felt like an idiot, deservedly so I guess.
There are a lot of fake stories out there, and if you see somebody in your network who
shares something that you know not to be legitimate, don't do a public comment, you know, send
a discrete private message saying "Hey, I found out about this, you might want to take
it down. It's not real. You know, show some respect folks. I mean that's what I thought
I would share today. and I saw that happen recently some other people were saying to
somebody else and I thought, "You know people, have a little class for crying out loud."
So that's my tip for today, if you have tips to share, questions to answer, everyday@prospectandflourish.com.
Thanks so much, see you tomorrow.
