Greetings from the University of Illinois.
One of the privileges of traveling around Illinois, the US, and, in fact, the globe
as president of the University is hearing how this great institution has impacted lives
and communities for the better.
The University of Illinois is the largest educator of college graduates in the state
-- more than 22,000 degrees were awarded just this past year.
We're a major employer with a significant economic impact on the state's economy.
We conduct nearly one billion dollars in externally funded research each year. We provide a vast
array of educational and health-care resources to communities across Illinois. Our Extension
has a service footprint in every county in the state.
When I am on our campuses -- whether helping break ground for a new research building in
Chicago, or hosting an economic summit in Rockford, being a part of the grand opening
of a high-tech virtual training facility in a hospital in Peoria, or cutting a ribbon
to reopen historic Lincoln Hall in Urbana, or addressing commencement exercises in Springfield
-- I cherish learning about the accomplishments and aspirations of our students, our faculty,
and our staff.
At alumni events around the country, and the world, I hear how a U of I degree has transformed
the lives of our more than 620,000 graduates.
Every day I am reminded of the many ways that the University of Illinois is fulfilling its
land-grant mission. Whereever I travel, I am proud to represent
the University of Illinois and humbled to serve as its president.
Cheryl and I send to you and to our friends around the globe our best wishes during this
holiday season.
