Former store owner owes salary Facebook users thumbed a thread got sued.
Liking a Facebook thread can get u sued. Is this for real?
"Bad Enough Hall", the hip-store that exclusively carries Dr. Martens
is owned by Hu Jing-nan.
Hu started "Roll Magazine" 2 years ago,
but it went bankrupt due to poor financial management.
It's been alleged he still owes employees salaries,
and the issue is now the center of a libel lawsuit.
On August 3rd last year,
Emily, a former employee of "Bad Enough Hall" posted a thread on facebook.
"How come everyone got their May salary except for me?
Are you playing me for a fool?"
Co-worker Eric responded to the thread.
"Wow,the chamber pot really stinks. Go to hell!"
However, a year later Eric got a court summons.
When the court session started last month, he finally realized he was being sued by Hu for "reputational harm."
To his disbelief, a random web user surnamed Hsu, who liked the tread on Facebook was also sued.
Eric and Hsu appeared at the court not knowing what they've were being sued for.
Hsu said the whole incident has got nothing to do with her.
If liking a thread can lead to a lawsuit, who would want to use Facebook in the future?
Eric said, employees were working for no pay. Expressing their frustrations is unavoidable.
But to sue Facebook users for liking a thread
is just out of line.
Lawyers said
if others do not know who the thread is degrading
then the offences of insult and libel do not apply.
However,
if Facebook users share others' inappropriate threads,
which leads to the threads receiving a bigger audience,
users could still face civil lawsuits and compensation claims.
Hu was involved in a
"fake expense, real credit card swiping" case last April.
Which is still under investigation by prosecutors.
