It's really exciting to be a student here at Wayne State because each and every day
we get more and more connected to the city, which a lot of schools, even urban schools
don't have that connection to their surroundings.
One thing I don't think people know about living on campus and being in Detroit
is that there's a really involved and exciting community of people that live in Midtown
and go to school here.
We've got people who are here at Eastern Market every week
and the students go out and we volunteer, we do urban gardening
we go downtown, there's a ton of cultural festivals.
It gives you an opportunity not only to just you know be a part of
the growth of the city but be part of the change, be effecting change.
Living in Midtown has really inspired me because it's the museum district.
So I can walk to the DIA and see Yoko Ono's artwork.
I can see Picasso, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt.
They're my neighbors, in a way.
Coming here, it made me more passionate to pursue medicine.
Talking to advisors, they are pushing me
Like "Karrington, you can do this! You can go to medical school."
"You can go to THIS medical school!"
Which is one of the best medical schools in the country.
I have always wanted to be a teacher.
I want to be able to connect to that student and say
"Hey, I know what you're going through, I was there!"
They see a living, breathing example in front of them.
The faculty at Wayne have supported my own goals by giving us those opportunites
to get out into those inner city classrooms.
College is expensive, and my parents didn't necessarily plan
for me to go to a four year university right off the bat.
But because of generous donations from alumni and other donors
I was able to pursue a four year degree here.
The Biomedical Engineering program is fantastic
you can work really closely with faculty members
You can learn about their research and you can just walk up to
someone and say I would love to be a part of this
and they will sit down with you and teach you what you need to know.
I have always been passionate about art. I have always been passionate about creating
That's what's great about being in the community with your professors in with the staff at
Wayne State is that they want you to succeed, they want you to do well so if they
hear of an opportunity for you, they're going to contact you.
They give you all of the tools and material, anything that you need in order to soar.
I think that Wayne State is a phenomenal school for practical experience.
Everybody who goes to Wayne State who's Engineering is telling me
they're doing some type of internship, some type of experience, some type of research
I started at General Motors in 2011, during the summer
I've been there every summer consecutively since then
I've done so many different roles I've seen four different sides of a company
that has a ton of different faces
So I've had the opportunity to really grow.
Because you can learn one thing from a book, but I feel that you learn best from actually doing it.
Wayne State really pushes their students to get that experience, because they see the value.
Being in the Honor's College you get to interact with Detroit in a special way.
I currently am doing the Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project.
So I'm going to Spain Elementary and teaching young kids how to read.
It's a lot about leadership and service, and actually being a member of this amazing community.
Wayne State is a very diverse college
And you have a lot of students who are mothers, who are fathers
who are working two or three jobs to make ends meet.
Everybody has something different about them and that's what
sets you apart is when you combine differences, and create something new.
In Detroit I've seen so many new businesses come in since I moved here it's just
fantastic to see this amount of growth and I want to be a part of that growth in the future.
It's important for me to be at Wayne State right here and right now because this is
where I'm supposed to be. This is where I was going to thrive and this is how I
was going to pursue and make my dreams come true.
