I think at the last count there were more than 35 million vehicles on the road and with
that inevitable mix of drivers, riders, pedestrians, cyclists, LGV drivers, coach and bus drivers
there are going to be a huge number of road traffic accidents. Now we've got the best
driving test standards in the world, in my opinion, with a theoretical and practical
element of the test, Pass Plus, IAM and RoSPA for advanced standards, and despite all that
a road traffic officer told me once there is no such thing as a dangerous road, there
are only careless drivers and the idea of my presentations is to raise the awareness
of people and how they perceive their driving and to highlight their legal responsibilities
to other road users.
Well its centred still around road safety and improving driver standards but in a slightly
different way I'm talking about changing a driver's attitude and awareness because with
all the road traffic accidents you have nearly all of them are caused through driver error
and I think that if people have a better understanding of what their legal responsibilities are in
both the criminal law and the civil law setting, and you understand that term Duty of Care
and what that means to other road users, hopefully it makes you a better driver.
I'm covering real cases that have been before the courts involving real people, real scenarios,
and a discussion of those I guarantee everyone in the room has an opinion whatever their
driving standards are they always have something to say whether that's a criticism of the criminal
or the civil courts, lawyers, how these cases are dealt with, should they be dealt with
in this way, and that's actually more exciting than it sounds. People do learn from it from
listening to other people's views and an understanding of the law. It helps.
Well I can only refer back to the feedback I get from nearly all the presentations I've
done. People come up and say Hey I really enjoyed the presentation but more importantly
I learnt a lot from it. I didn't know this about the criminal law, I didn't realise how
the civil law dealt with my driving standards in that way. I actually think I'm going to
think about things in a different way and overall that's going to make me a better driver.
