if you want no-nonsense guide to whole house water filtration then you need to
watch this video
water filtration
traditionaly comes in three approaches
water softeners reverse osmosis
and carbon
water softeners, named so because they
use ion exchange to replace the hard calcium with soft sodium
water softeners gained wide popularity because they eliminate hard scale build up
in the kitchen and bath
you can use less detergent in the dishwasher
and get better results
two problems occur however,
1, they don't actually filter anything
and 2, even if you did, you still can't drink
that nasty stuff. which is why if you have one
you no doubt have a reverse osmosis unit under the kitchen sink
reverse osmosis works by
using pressure to push only the H2O molecule
through tiny micron filters. As such
you get 1 gallon of pure H2O at a cost of
3-5 gallons of waste water
that is the reason that reverse osmosis is not a practical approach for
whole house water filtration
they do exist
but they are not for the average household. which brings us to carbon
carbon is really the staple of water filtration
you can get away from it
carbon
works by absorbtion
it absorbs organic compounds like chlorine
and chlorines harmful effects
carbon cannot however filter bacteria
but when it comes to
whole house water purification
that's okay because
the water filter housing is large enough
to have multiple media filters
each having different results and doing different things
there is even filter media which claims to reduce
water hardness
without eliminating calcium
and that is actually the topic of another video within the stellar channel
to salt or not to sell
that is the question
