the story of California
the story of you
I'm Ted Cohen
I'm the designer for the art gallery
What’s interesting is the juxtaposition between the Thomas Hill painting and this painting.
I think that's what's so exciting about seeing what this particular museum is trying to do.
To be a really diversifying institution to present then and now.
Hello. I'm René de Guzman, senior curator of at the Oakland Museum of California.
Barry is doing this commission for the Oakland Museum and I couldn't be any happier that we're doing this.
California, which is what the museum is about, I think dovetails really well with what Barry's work is about.
California's is about this sort of open, expansive, generous , democratic, set of ideals and I think that's sort of involved with what Barry's about.
He’s already been an established artist that museums collect and that’s a key point to how artists are viewed in the future.
That community institutions have said that Barry is somebody that speaks to our time and our place.
So that’s one thing. The other thing is that I think that Barry’s one of those folks that have gained traction not only with artists …
… he has an enormous amount of respect from the artist community but also institutions around the world.
So I really feel that fifty years from now he will be considered one of the great artists of his generation.
At first I didn’t know what was going on but now I’m starting to feel the vibe.
Yeah … this guy was coming in with all these pieces … what’s gonna happen but it’s coming together.
I feel that the melting pot of colors and shapes tells a lot about the Bay Area and California itself.
