>>>Dr. Jay K. Harness: If we look at the incidence of breast cancer around the world, historically,
one of the lowest incidences of breast cancer has been in Asia. As I have shared in other
videos, that incidence is going up, the more westernized Asia becomes. And so, a really
interesting question that has come up is for Asian women who live in the United States,
because the incidence of breast cancer in Asian women in Asia is lower than in the United
States. Is it still lower for those Asian women who are living in the United States?
And the answer, of course, is a mixed bag kind of answer.
For Asian women newly arriving from Asia, now living in the United States, their incidence
of breast cancer is pretty similar to where they come from in Asia. For Asian women living
long periods of time in the United States, their incidence of breast cancer is increasing
up toward that incidence that we experience here in the US. For second generation and
beyond Asian women in the United States, their incidence is the same as other groups by and
large.
So, big question for me, I live and work in Orange County, California; we have a large
Vietnamese population here; we have a large Korean population as well as other Asian nationalities.
So, what is the bottom line of this very-very good question? The bottom line is that if
you are an Asian woman living in the United States, you want to follow the recommendations
and the criteria of the American Cancer Society for breast cancer screening, that is particularly
true, if you have a family history of breast cancer and particularly true if that family
history goes back to your Asian country of origin. So, what am I thinking? I am thinking
screening. We know how important screening is in lowering the mortality from breast cancer.
So, if you are Asian or not, please be screened.
