Hey guys this video is gonna be a look behind the scenes on my last video
Holiday of the Doctor and hopefully I'll be able to reveal
how I did some of the shots and also some of the little
mistakes or easter eggs in there you can look for
if you watch it. So I had the idea to do
Holiday of the Doctor about two years ago. I think I was going to call it
The Doctor's Holiday or The Doctor's Summer Holiday
but then when the Day of the Doctor happened for the 50th anniversary
it obviously made sense to call it Holiday of the Doctor.
So the scene of the Doctor on holiday was actually shot on a beach in
south-east Spain
I gave up some of the limited room in my tiny hand luggage
to take my Doctor Who cosplay and sonic screwdriver
to Spain on holiday so I could dress up and shoot
some of my video. It was pretty embarrassing sat on the beach in that outfit
especially because it was such a hot day and I had my jacket and my bow tie on
and I was not dressed for the beach and a lot of people stood around watching us
record the video, especially the scene where
my family ran past in the background screaming because they were being
chased by a Dalek. As you can imagine I added
the Dalek in when I was editing. Doctor Who is enjoyed by people all over the world
so I kinda wanted to make a video where anyone can watch it without needing to
understand the language
There's a few sort-of written jokes in there where you'd need to understand English
by I think even if you didn't speak English you'd still
get all the Doctor Who references. Obviously to go on holiday
we needed an airport. Well none of it was filmed in an airport
as you can imagine. All the check-in scenes with Astrid as the check-in girl
that was all
shot right here in my apartment on a green screen. Some of the scenes in the airport
are real though, They were filmed in a studio foyer
here in Salford and I added some signage whhen I was editing to make it look a bit more
like an airport. So the scenes where I'm coming
in and out of the Tardis are real. So for the scene on the plane
with Cherry we were actually offered a real plane from an airport here
but unfortunately we couldn't do the dates they wanted
and Cherry couldn't do the dates so we ended up just building our own plane interior
right here in that corner of my apartment. We stuck
green card the walls for windows, we printed off some signage
and I hired some chairs, and I think it pretty much looked like the interior
of an aeroplane.
So we've taken over my flat and built a plane. Doesn't look like much now
but if you get close enough in, it kinda looks like we're on a flight together.
CHERRY: It does. CHRIS: And we're about to do our special effect shot
where the plane is nose-diving. How are we achieving
this effect? CHERRY: By wobbling.
CHRIS: We're gonna wobble. [they scream]
[the sonic screwdriver buzzes]
I think that was one of my
favourite scenes to shoot especially putting the custard and fish fingers on Cherry.
I hadn't really warned her that I was going to do that because I figured
if I text Cherry "I'm gonna cover you in custard" she would say no
and wouldn't be in it, so I kinda sprung that on her on the day.
CHERRY: Ok we're done. Can we clear this [beep] off me now? Seriously get all this [beep] off me.
CHRIS: So for the exterior of the plane
I didn't wanna use CGI because I don't know how to make
3D planes and it'd probably take a very long time so instead I bought this little
model and it was an airfix model so I had to glue it together
and then hand-paint the livery on it and then literally
held it against the green screen and wobbled it about a bit and that was our plane
that was our Doctair flight
I think models models have this little charm that CGI
can't match. Like when you watch my video now you'll know that
behind the green screen there's my hand holding this plane on a little stick
wobbling it around, and that's more fun than CGI isn't it?
And here's a little easter egg for you, the in-flight safety card
which appears very briefly in the video is actually the airfix model's instructions
coloured in. Another easter egg to look out for is the
one shot in my video I had to go back and add in
because I realised I'd missed out a shot that told part
of my story and by the time I realised I'd already had
a haircut so I had really short hair and also
ruined my Matt Smith cosplay shirt because I washed all the outfits
together... I washed my Matt Smith shirt with the
air stewardess costume and the red leaked and now my Matt Smith shirt is
bright red. So there's one shot the video where
from one shot to the next my hair
and my shirt changes colour. But you can't really tell because it's from behind
so look and see if you can spot it.
I hope you've enjoyed this look at how I made Holiday of the Doctor.
Please remember to subscribe
and also leave me a comment and let me know where the Doctor should go next
because I might make this a series... we'll see, don't hold me to that. Thank you for watching
and I will see you soon, bye.
