Hello, my name is Helen Magalhaes and I'm one of the
Freshman English instructors and I am here
to assist you with argumentation.
So, I will give you a quick lecture about argument.
So, argument happens all the time, either verbally or in writing.
Argument is when different statements or reasons come
together with the purpose of establishing a position
in an attempt to persuade others to accept your
point of view, or to understand your point of view.
An argument has two parts. We have a
claim and then you have a reason
or support. Now, what is a claim? A claim, also
known as thesis statement, is the starting point of your
argument. It tells others what you will be arguing about.
Now, even though a claim is argumentative on its own,
it's not really enough. So when you claim something,
when you give your thesis statement, you also want to provide your
audience with support or reason. So they can
believe what you are talking about. So you can persuade them.
Let's say that my claim or my thesis statement
is English 1301 students
have great support outside of the classroom in writing.
Ok, so why should you believe me? Obviously
your going to believe me because I'm your instructor, but
why should you really believe me? So, to believe me I will
provide you with support. So, here's my support. Students who are
having a hard time writing an essay
can direct themselves to the writing center, where they can
get support. Get help from tutors
who will help the students in
any process of writing, any state.
I just provided you with a claim, and I then I provided the support.
Now that we know about claims
or thesis statements and reasons and support, I want to
warn you. When you are doing your argument
make sure that it's
something that has not yet been established.
if it's something that we, something that has already been proven. Has
already been established, then there is no reason to
argue about it. So let's say that I say that
Texas A&M University Commerce was founded in 1889.
Why would I argue about that if it
has already been established. So there's no reason
to argue. We already know, so it's done. It's set.
Another important tip when you are writing,
your argumentative essay or when your
making an argument, is that
there's not really a wrong
support.
However, there is less persuasive
and there is a more persuasive argument. so therefore when you are making
your argument, make sure that you provide your audience with a
clear and strong thesis statement, and
reasons to make them believe
the point. So before I go, we will recap everything.
So, we talk about the
meaning, what is an argument, which is different
statement, reasons to come together to establish your positions
in order to persuade others, your audience, to
except your point of view.
An argument consists of a claim and support.
a claim is also known as a thesis statement
but it’s not enough, so you have to provide your audience with
great support. We also
saw that there's no reason for us to argue about something that has been
established. When joining an argument
not really a write or wrong argument, there's only
more persuasive or less persuasive. So,
I hope this has helped you and
I am very happy to be here and assist you with this
process. Good luck.
