Good morning everybody, IÄôm Karla Macias and welcome to
another episode of the Best Docs Network featuring Forest Park
Medical Center right here in San Antonio.
In this episode wÄôre going to take a look into this brand new
hospital thatÄôll feature some of the best doctors, some of the
latest technology and the best equipment in your area.
Now letÄôs jump into our very first doctor, pain specialist
Dr. James Growney.
Spinal injections are a majority of what we treat.
WÄôre anesthesiologists who do pain management and that sets us
apart in the whole pain management spectrum is that we
do, wÄôre the experts in the injection treatments for lots of
problems.
Back about 5 years ago I had my first back surgery but every now
and then there was some discomfort so my back doctor
sent me to Dr. Growney, pain management, and I got my first
epidural.
Some people are immediately better and some of thatÄôs the
local anesthetic that we use which in some people this is the
first break theÄôve had for days or weeks and they actually
walk out of here feeling great.
In some of those people the local anesthetic will help them
initially.
They feel better but theyÄôre going to feel better within one
to three days when this cortisone or steroid medicine
gets to work.
Very, very severe pain, it had gone from moderate to severe
over the last couple of years and we had to have those
injections and very painless and very helpful.
To take somebody that, they may not be in agony but they caÄôt
do their job and theyÄôre consumed by pain or just
irritated by it to the degree they caÄôt function and you
get them better, they can function better, yeah you
donÄôt get any more rewarding than that.
ThaÄôs what itÄôs all about.
HÄôs very gentle, heÄôs very jovial, hÄôs just a neat guy
and hÄôs just a wonderful person and I trust him with me,
with my life, with my back, hÄôs putting needles in there.
Anybody that takes the time and the patience and what everybody
gripes about is the doctor never spends enough time with you and
he does just a fabulous job of explaining it and listening to
you and he takes notes and pays attention.
IÄôs really nice to have a doctor that you can have
confidence in.
Each Forest Park facility is very unique.
There are currently 3 facilities open in Texas.
The largest facility is in Dallas, the second facility was
open in Frisco which is in the north Dallas area and the third
one in Southlake which is near the DFW airport.
Each facility is unique and different and a lot of that is
because of the make up of the physicians that are
participating with Forest Park in each community.
The mix of physicians is unique, the services provided is unique.
IÄôs tailored to the needs of the physician and medical
community in each city.
Each facility is stunning, they look like 5 star hotels,
theÄôre beautiful.
The physicians now have an opportunity to take their
patients to a facility that focuses on quality care and
quality outcomes for their patients in a beautiful setting.
Did you know that in 2011 Forest Park Medical Center was voted as
one of the top 20 most beautiful hospitals in the United States?
Also Forest Park Medical Centers were the only hospital in Texas
to make this prestigious list.
Forest Park Medical Center is your destination to better
health.
And speaking of better health, Forest Park Medical Center
doesnÄôt only make it a priority to help out in the
hospital but also around your community.
LetÄôs take a look into the Zero Prostate Cancer Run here in
San Antonio, Texas.
My husband and I decided to start a prostate cancer charity
called Los Padres in memory of our fathers, both of whom had
cancer when they passed away.
And so we wanted to do an activity here in our own
community and partnered with Urology San Antonio and Zero, a
national nonprofit that puts on runs around the country.
There was a cancer center named after me by Urology San Antonio
and my wife and I felt an obligation to make sure the
community knew more than just a name on the center and so we
decided to make it our mission to bring more awareness to
prostate cancer then try and save some lives.
So this year we put on the inaugural San Antonio Zero
Prostate Cancer Run.
This was my first involvement in putting on a race and Zero puts
on a great boot camp in January and so we had about nine months
to prepare that included recruiting sponsors to help us
put on the race and we had great corporate partners here in San
Antonio that were willing to step up since it was an
inaugural event and take a risk and believe that there was a
niche for something about menÄôs health and Forest Park
didÄôt even have their doors open and you know stepped up for
us and was a wonderful partner.
Forest Park is honored to be here today to sponsor this
inaugural run here in San Antonio.
TheÄôve had an amazing turnout and iÄôs exciting because
230,000 men each year are diagnosed with prostate cancer
and wÄôre excited to be a part of this new endeavor and to help
get people the care that they need.
ThereÄôs a real sigma with guys about talking about their health
and they doÄôt want to go until things are really bad and
then theyÄôll be forced to go to the doctor.
Well the prostate cancer if you wait until yoÄôre symptomatic,
the likelihood is the disease is going to be much more advanced
and much more difficult to treat.
Early detection is important and so we together in the community
want to encourage all men to get checked early.
Prostate cancer is very, very important to me, I almost lost
my life over it.
Early screening and detection is the only way to prevent serious
metastasis and death.
We want to really educate men and empower them to take control
of their own health to recognize that itÄôs a very simple
process, a PSA which is a very simple blood test and a digital
*** exam which is about a 7 second exam.
That combination really gives a baseline and allows them to have
a monthly exam and know that theÄôre doing all they can to
detect this disease should it occur early.
We had an after dash bash and we had live music, we had door
prizes.
We wanted to celebrate our prostate cancer warriors and
have an opportunity for them to interact with each other, talk
about where they are in treatment, or what they went
through, for their families to respond and of course we gave
away awards for our overall runners in their age groups and
it was really a celebration.
We had great food vendors.
It was a fun way to celebrate and really wrap up the event.
Our stretch goal was to raise $50,000 and wÄôre almost to
$100,000 so we were just thrilled.
Right now wÄôre tracking to beat the record for the most
successful Zero inaugural race in the country over their 8 year
history and 38 cities so weÄôre really excited about that and
next year I hope somebody beats us.
Best Docs Network featuring Forest Park Medical Center,
welcome to the twenty first century of cutting edge
medicine, Forest Park Medical Center.
Kelsey has a question for Dr. Jose Barrera.
What can be done to improve skin texture and give me a more
youthful look?
Skin texture can be improved with fillers, it can also be
improved with laser surgery or laser resurfacing.
We have minimally invasive tools now that do not require surgery
that are in office procedures that can be done over a lunch
time or lunch time hour.
And so on a normal doctorÄôs visit we can offer patients
different treatments that can provide a more youthful
appearance right away.
Neal Richards Group has been the exclusive developer for Forest
Park Medical Center and San Antonio is our latest and
greatest addition.
WÄôre situated on top of a hill so it truly acts as a
beacon for Forest Park Medical Center San Antonio.
It takes on that hill country like feel which is really one of
the fundamental things in San Antonio.
Forest Park Medical Center San Antonio was designed very much
to fit in with the local San Antonio architecture.
Address, themes off of the Texas hill country so at completion
whenever you pull onto the campus yoÄôre going to see a
lot of heavy stones, a lot of drought tolerant landscape, a
lot of neutral colors, some wood and timber there as well as some
medal and glass.
The Forest Park Medical Center San Antonio campus has 80,000
square feet of available medical office space, iÄôs Class A
space and iÄôs on campus, iÄôs right there at the front
door of the hospital so physicians who are interested in
relocating their practice there can really reduce their commute
time and just go to one single location on a weekly basis.
And they can see their patients for exams and preoperative
workups in the medical office space that they lease.
And then on their other days they can go right there to the
hospital and do their surgical cases there in one location as
opposed to having to traverse all over greater San Antonio.
Forest Park Medical Center campus consists of the surgical
specialty hospital which is 154,000 square feet.
ThereÄôs 12 operating rooms and a total of 54 patient beds.
It also has a 470 car parking garage as well as 80,000 square
foot Class A medical office building.
Current progress in San Antonio on the construction site is
still going exceptionally well.
WÄôve had great weather and wÄôre on target still to
complete May of 2014.
Concrete pours are occurring daily right now.
Our first elevated concrete pour was last Saturday and wÄôll
have one per week leading up to top out which is in October.
One great thing about Forest Park is that they include the
dining aspect or the food aspect for our patient care.
Not only do they have great dieticians on site to make sure
that the dietary needs are met for the patients but they also
consider the patients families needs as well.
LetÄôs face it, sometimes youÄôre in the hospital, this
facility, six or seven hours if not longer, sometimes overnight,
sometimes two or three days and iÄôs not the typical food.
We do everything from scratch which means that we do
everything from the starting point all the way to the
finished product.
We do pork tenderloin, we do roasted chickens, we do gourmet
pizzas.
We even do some things like grandmÄôs meatloaf but
everythinÄôs made from scratch.
We follow recipes, nothing comes out of a can.
Our sauces are all made from scratch.
When you walk into our dining facility, our dining facility
here is named Caf© 114, it feels like a real ca©.
You donÄôt walk into it and iÄôs the oh type of tray lined
service here, every single day the menu changes.
So for example one day you may have a carving station with a
prime rib on it.
The next day on that carving station it may be a baked potato
bar and the plate itself is a work of art.
IÄôs just not something thaÄôs piled on the plate and
sent to the guest or sent to the patient.
IÄôs a work of art because you know you may not always come in
here where yoÄôre just on a clear liquid diet, you can
actually have surgery where you can eat regular food.
So we have to take those cases and we want them to feel like
you know what this is unbelievable, this is not
hospital food.
We doÄôt ever want to be stereotyped or categorized as
hospital food.
We are a ca© dining facility and you can get fresh grilled
salmon, we have fresh tuna here, we have a fish of the week.
We have grilled pork chops you can get, grilled chicken.
Along with that you can have that grilled, make your salad,
give it to one of my grill cooks and wÄôll put it on the salad
for you.
It really starts with Chef Jason Douglas.
This guy is absolutely amazing when it comes to food.
He is truly an artist when it comes to the culinary aspect of
it.
He has an eye for making your food look so pretty and edible
at the same time that you donÄôt want to touch it because
it looks so great.
ThaÄôs one element about dining service I doÄôt have to
worry about because I know when hÄôs there that the guests,
our patients are going to get the absolute best that he has to
offer every single day.
So what we try to do is we try to be innovative with our food,
very cost effective, but most importantly want a great quality
of food.
I have this saying that if iÄôs not done in the spirit of
excellence, we woÄôt serve it.
Did you know that by logging on to our website that you can
request an appointment with any of the doctors that youÄôve see
on todaÄôs show?
So logon to our website, bestdocsnetwork.com.
Now on to our next doctor, plastic and reconstruction
specialist, Dr. Chet Nastala.
The initial problem that I had with my breast reconstruction is
I had it done in Alaska.
Your options are very limited there so I had to have it redone
because I was considered disfigured.
I had breast implants and they were not sitting properly and
they were shaped funny so I was searching for an alternative.
She was having problems with the implants, they were too tight,
she felt that they were giving her discomfort and she didnÄôt
like the shape.
She wasÄôt satisfied at all with her reconstruction.
She had looked on the internet and done some searching and felt
that reconstruction with her own tissue was the best option.
There was not a doctor trained to do it in Alaska so I went
with the implants and was unhappy with them.
And so when PRMA came up the very first thing it said was
DIEP flap breast reconstruction and it made me very excited so I
called them.
And happily she had some connections to San Antonio and
was able to make the trip here to reconstruct her breast with
her own tissue.
She ultimately wound up having the implants removed, the scar
tissue removed from around the implants and reconstruction with
the DIEP flap.
With the DIEP flap reconstruction they take the
excess skin and fat from your abdominal area and they move it
up to create your breast out of your own tissue.
There are certainly advantages to using your own tissue the
long term because the breast will age with you, itÄôs a
soft, warm living structure of your body.
The implants that I initially had, they hurt.
They put them between your pectoral muscle and your ribcage
so they sit right on your ribs and iÄôs very uncomfortable,
it doesÄôt feel natural and so with these iÄôs all me.
SheÄôs free from the pain of her implants and shÄôs also
happy with the shape and the natural soft warm feeling of
having her own tissue to reconstruct the breast.
IÄôs fair to say that Dr. Nastala and Dr. Ledoux and the
entire staff here at PRMA have changed my life and my outlook
on myself.
My self-image is higher now than it was before I walked through
these doors.
Over the years in my career IÄôve seen how hospitals have
gone from being directed by physicians, the doctors that
work there to being directed by big corporations often not even
listening to what the doctors need.
Forest Park is a different type of development where actually
the physicians are able to communicate and get the needs
met as we used to be able to do 15 or 20 years ago.
I had a lot of input on how I wanted to take care of my
patients but now I feel like I have a lot more input on how our
hospital approaches taking care of patients and being able to
influence not only what IÄôm doing but being able to
influence the receptionists who come in, the staff who process
patients and the transport staff but all of us to make this,
wÄôre all working for the same goal and itÄôs nice to know
that Äôm able to have a part of the say in that and be able
to produce a place where people feel like theÄôre getting a
great quality of care.
It was a hospital that truly put the doctors and the patients
interests first.
We have a say in the patients care.
I feel like the quality of care is going to be taken to the next
level whether iÄôs the spaciousness of the rooms, the
one on one nursing, the operating rooms that are
dedicated to your specialty, the managers who are constantly
asking questions on how they can improve the quality of care.
I see nothing but an upside in joining Forest Park.
What Äôm looking forward to in joining the Forest Park family
is to have a group of colleagues both primary care physicians as
well as surgical sub specialists which I can call and be able to
discuss patient care with and be able to offer patients the best
treatment.
As far as medicine is concerned, a single physician cannot treat
the entire patient and so by joining a family like that at
Forest Park I can lean on my primary care colleagues as well
as my surgical sub specialty colleagues to treat patients
that often present with multiple problems.
I think Forest Park is a wonderful opportunity.
In this development wÄôll be able to give superior care to
the patients and the doctors are able to direct the care.
IÄôs a beautiful facility, iÄôs going to give the best
care in this region.
I am so looking forward to being part of the Forest Park Medical
Center here in San Antonio.
I know that if I was to get sick and need hospitalization, I know
which hospital I would want to go to and that would be Forest
Park.
Did you know Forest Park Medical Center is known for having
larger than average operating rooms.
Larger ORÄôs allow doctors the flexibility to house
groundbreaking technology such as the Da Vinci Robot, the
Makoplasty robotic arm and Acessa that helps improve
minimally invasive and accurate procedures.
Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the
urinary tract system and male reproductive organs.
Now letÄôs introduce San Antonio urologist, Dr. Michael
White.
IÄôm Michael White and IÄôm a urologist with Urology San
Antonio and I specialize in robotic surgery.
My main purpose with robotic surgery is to minimize
patientÄôs discomfort yet still treat them like a family member
in how I would have my family treated.
I did my training at the Cleveland Clinic so I bring a
high level of robotic training to the area.
I think what makes Forest Park unique and different is truly
the culture that we have.
A lot of places present that they have the patient care and
the employee satisfaction in their culture, but when you walk
into Forest Park you feel the difference.
Our directors over our units are very passionate about what we do
and since wÄôre a physician owned facility, the physicians
that are here are very involved in the care and in the decisions
that we make down to the in-patient level.
One thing I really love about Forest Park and I tell everyone
that I talk with in my nursing career about Forest Park, I like
to talk about the camaraderie thaÄôs here.
I really enjoy just a positive, energetic setting with the
staff.
Everyone works quite well together.
Inter department, just you know pharmacy, ER, X-ray, the
doctors, the nurses, itÄôs just a really cohesive unit and I
really enjoy that.
And I fell like every day I come here I enjoy my day and that
says a lot because nursing can be really stressful.
To be able to come here and feel the support from my teammates
and to have a good day at the end of every day, iÄôs
something I really appreciate.
The best thing about working at Forest Park is that we are a
family here.
All the directors know each other.
We know each other inside and outside of the hospital.
We know how to work well with each other and our
administration here at Forest Park really appreciates and
shows us how much they appreciate us, not in big ways
but in small ways every day that really make a difference in the
place where you want to work.
One thing that really stood out about Forest Park was just the
quality of patient care and just the way the patients are
treated, the not only high level of patient care thaÄôs
delivered but also the entire experience that they receive
here.
The facility promotes patient satisfaction, patient care which
are all things that are very important to me and iÄôs a
facility that I feel like are vey in line with their values
and what they view.
Unless you worked at a hospital like Forest Park yoÄôre going
to find that therÄôs a lot to learn, a lot to do and a lot of
rewarding experiences to be had here.
The things that make Forest Park unique are our focus on whaÄôs
best for the patient and whaÄôs best for the physician.
WÄôre different in many ways from other organizations because
our physicians are our owners, they are our bosses and to that
end we want to do whatever we can to be sure that they get
their needs met.
WÄôre here for them, theÄôre here for their patients and
working together, wÄôre not fighting a bureaucracy, wÄôre
not fighting a corporate office thaÄôs not even in the same
state as us sometimes.
WÄôre making whaÄôs best for this hospital at this moment at
that time.
We doÄôt have to wait and thaÄôs what our physicians
like, immediate results.
As new things become available like the MAKO robot, some of the
new technologies, Forest Park is very quick to want to be a part
of those things.
If thatÄôs something that our surgeon wants or feels like
would benefit his patient population, wÄôre willing to
do that for them and thatÄôs exciting to have an organization
that leaps forward that quickly.
IÄôs much more collaborative, theÄôre very involved in their
choice of equipment.
We try to involve them in any major decisions so that they
feel that they have a buy into this, theÄôre a part of it.
One of the physicians said to me the other day, I feel like
IÄôve worked with this team for years because it just got the
flow down, it just works.

Now on to our next doctor, urologist Dr. LeRoy Jones.
Initially what began to happen is I was experiencing ED,
erectile dysfunction.
It was at the point that I couldÄôt maintain an ***
and we spent five years literally researching trying to
find an answer.
After we found on the internet that the symptoms that I was
having was related to PeyroniÄôs I finally saw a
urologist who said that he was not an expert in ED but he
recommended that I call someone by the name of Dr. Jones.
Well when a patient first presents with PeyroniÄôs we
like to see them right away, I mean typically what happens is
is that the guy will notice some curvature or his partner and
theÄôre not really sure whatÄôs going on.
And so weÄôll start out typically with oral therapy and
then depending on how the patient is doing we may continue
with that.
If itÄôs progressing or getting worse then weÄôll do whaÄôs
called intralesional therapy and thaÄôs actually injection
therapy and then if thaÄôs not effective then therÄôs surgery
and thereÄôs some corrective surgery to straighten it out and
then last a *** prosthesis.
So a lot of it just really depends on how bad the curvature
is and when the patient gets to us.
So Dr. Jones confirmed my situation and what was so
encouraging he says you know the problem that you have youÄôre
not going to be able to fix yourself.
He says I have a solution and that solution was a ***
implant.
He had his implant and he did very well with it.
HÄôs not from San Antonio, drove in had his surgery still
an outpatient operation, stayed in a hotel, saw him back the
next day and went home and he came back in six weeks and we
taught him how to use it and you know with our staff.
IÄôs changed his life, hÄôs a different person.
The thing about implants is most guys that get them, they always
regret waiting.
After I had the procedure done the results were really far
exceeding in the expectations that I had.
So now my wife and I still have the emotional tie, now we have
that physical part of our life back that we enjoyed.
Kelly has a question for Dr. Meany.
Can cranberry juice cure my UTI?
For the most part we believe that when people take cranberry
or blueberry it may make bacteria less sticky to our
tissues.
But it may not be able to cure a UTI.
The other problem with the cranberry juice is that it has a
lot of sugar and a lot of acidity so often when you have a
UTI thereÄôs some issues with the bladder lining being
inflamed so adding that extra acid is irritating and of course
for my diabetic patients the extra sugar is not exactly a
great recommendation.
So often Äôll have people either use blueberries or they
make cranberry tablets and generally iÄôs thought that
that may help to keep down bacterial adherence to the
urinary tissue.
