Recycling, we've all heard of it and in Darlington about half of us even do it but what’s it
all about and why are you watching this video about it?
There are nearly 100,000 people living in Darlington and last year we produced nearly
38,000 tonnes of household waste
Enough to cover our football pitch at Darlington stadium with black bags over five times!
But, and here’s the problem, out of all this waste we only recycle 25 percent
Just a quarter and that’s not enough!
By 2010 we are aiming to recycle much more, over 50 percent in fact. And that's where
you come in
How is this going to happen? Well here's the clever part.
We are working in partnership with a company called John Wade Recycling to devise a rather
clever way of recycling more waste than ever before, but before we look at that here’s
what you need to do
From summer 2009 it is extremely important that we all look at our waste in a whole new
way
It will mean changes for everyone whether you already recycle or just throw everything
into the same bin.
Either way we will all have to change.
From summer 2009 we all need to separate waste into three easy to remember types; Glass,
Paper and Cardboard and everything else!
So Glass goes into your green box, Paper and Cardboard goes into your blue bag and everything
else simply goes into the black sack.
Easy isn't it!
Your black sacks will be collected each week, your green box and blue bag each fortnight
and all is taken to the recycling centre.
When it arrives
The glass goes here
The paper and card goes here
And the black sacks get sorted here.
Now for a bit of science
The stuff that can't be recycled goes here in this warehouse. The warehouse is a labyrinth
of pipes and stuff and the waste goes in one end and out the other.
It takes about two weeks, and when its finished all the food and smelly stuff has gone, then
machinery at the plant goes to work taking out all the other recycling items such as,
plastic bottles and cartons, steel and aluminium cans, other metals and cartons such as Tetrapak
and milk cartons.
The result is a lot less waste coming out than went in
Which means a lot less going to landfill, and less landfill is what it’s all about!
So now you know what it’s all about we need to get started. It is up to us all to do our
bit
And to Make Waste Work!
REMEMBER
Glass in your green box, Paper and Cardboard in your Blue Bag …everything else in your
black sack
