I was asked about the pigs. This was built for the pigs to sleep in. And from everything
I've read, because I don't know what I'm doing, I've just read books, they said that the best
way to face the entrance to the pig pen was south. So this way is North. This way is south.
Behind is East, that is west. Straight up ahead. So we faced it south to avoid the prevalent
North winds in the winter, that is also why we put the greenhouse there, to block the
winds. Here though, the main winds all winter long have come from this direction right here.
Right between that gap in the trees (south west). So the pigs have had wind right into
their pen the whole time. So I had hay bales stacked up in a wall around it and put the
pallet (skid) on top of it. But whenever the weather was the least bit nice, the pigs came
out, knocked down the hay bales and tore them up. Because that's what piggies love to bash
hay bales around. So before the last big snow storm, I took out the hay bales, and put the
dry hay in their house. Everytime I put straw in their house, they push it out. And then
they complain that they don't have any straw to keep them warm. So I just tied this old
pallet to the front of the house and put the last remaining bale to kind of block from
this way. That worked out pretty good. They don't like it. They sit and butt at it and
try to get it to move because they think they need more room. But it does keep the snow
out of their house and most of the wind out and it keeps a lot of the hay nice so that
I can just shovel it back in every time we get a cold snap. It keeps their house dry.
They did have a little bit of a leak. So we took a feed bag and stapled it over the crack.
I should have put the inside, white side out to make it look better, but it works this
way. Nice for the piggies.
