Why do you think I didn't loose my hair? Why are there people who lose their hair? Why are there people who don't?
About the hair I have to say that I remember that you told me you weren't going to loose your hair
and I remember I told you "Cut it, because when you have it shorter it lasts longer"
And you didn't do as I said and really, your hair didn't fall off
I have a lot of examples in my carrier. When you tell people that something is going to turn out one way
and they think it isn't and it turns up to be the way they thought it was.
Those things... medicine mysteries that we sometimes can't explain but they exist and it's nice when it happens.
Do you think that faith, medicine, nutrition? Why do you think those mysteries happen?
In my opinion, the mental part is very important...
People that have a reason and are eager to live, it is impressive how,
in a lot of the cases you can see a response, they continue to work between one session of chemotherapy and another.
They manage the side effects properly, they are always positive...
those type of persons surprise you. Like the opposite, patients that have an excellent prognosis
and suddenly, mentally they aren't going to beat the disease and they don't.
Does a diet or special recommendations exist for people who are receiving chemotherapy?
We have to be careful with, for example, "avoiding infections"...
With food, it consists of trying to eat everything cooked,
if you go to a restaurant in a place where there is a salad buffet,
I recommend you don't eat those things because you don't know if there is a bacteria or something like that.
And as a health concern, I tell everybody; to try to eat few refined sugars, sweets, donuts and that sort of things.
In general, I let the patients live their normal life and I always tell them
that it is very important to let their lives take their own course, life goes on. If you like eating a grilled stake you are going to eat a grilled stake,
if you like to go out, go out, even if you like alcohol, well, the day they do chemotherapy I tell them not to drink alcohol,
but a few glasses of wine or something between chemotherapy sessions, for me, isn't a problem.
All of your patients adore you; you are the perfect doctor...that doctor who doesn't prohibit anything.
According to your experience, what causes cancer?
We all have genetic information to have cancer.
Those oncogenes are normally suppressed and don't manifest. That is why tumors don't grow on all of us.
Something has to happen in your life, there has to be a "hit", something that damages those suppressive genes.
Now, how does that something happen? It can be because you decided to smoke, it can be because you were exposed to radiation
or it can be because your immune system response decreased for many reasons...
One reason, and this is something previously studied, more or less, is stress,
lack of sleep, all of these things decrease your immune system response.
And when your immune vigilance decreases all of these genes that are suppressed have a chance to grow,
manifest and produce cancer.
It might be that a depressive state and on going stress can contribute
not only in terms of cancer appearing but also
not only in terms of cancer appearing but also determine whether or not each particular person responds well to treatment.
What would you say to people that refuse to do chemotherapies?
One thing that has changed the lives of cancer patients
is what we call "support medication"; nausea medication,
medication to avoid decreasing response in immune system.
This brings us to say that nowadays, in terms of treating cancer, more than 80% of the patients that receive chemotherapy aren't in the hospital,
they don't have any serious complications and we can maintain their treatment as a 100% out -- patient.
The field is moving every day more and more towards oral medicines;
chemotherapy through pills, which of course, have much less side effects.
These are what they call intelligent drugs.
They can keep working; continue with their lives normally...
They can model and make movies...
Make movies... go to interviews ahahaa...
There is still more to know. Don't miss the third part...
