The place that brought you taco shells made out of Doritos ... is now going upscale.
Taco Bell is rolling out a new gourmet Cantina menu.
The move was fodder for TV news.
WXIN: “Taco Bell is spicing up its menu. Upscale items will be added.”
WTVD: “Yes, Taco Bell and ‘upscale’ in the same sentence.”
CNBC: “Call it a Mexican showdown.”
We’re not so sure about that last one. Analysts are saying Taco Bell’s latest is a direct
challenge to competitors like Chipotle and QDoba. Celebrity chef Lorena Garcia created
the new menu. She told Fox Business it was a challenge, but...
“The challenge was an opportunity to reach so many with a menu that represents a choice
for people like me that really don’t do fast food. … I guess you can't rely on fraternity
boys all the time.”
Menu items will feature ingredients like black beans, cilantro rice, and citrus-and-herb-marinated
chicken. And though it’s being billed as a more upscale offering, Reuters is reporting
suggested prices will be just under $5. The LA Times suggests, Taco Bell isn’t the only
fast food gig going gourmet.
“In Italy, McDonald’s tapped Michelin-starred chef Gualtiero Marchesi to created limited-edition
hamburgers and swanky desserts. … Wendy's ... with the launch of its so-called mid-tier
W burger line.”
The new menu debuts nationally July 5th.
