Hi, I'm Nikeata. Nikeata Thompson.
I'm a choreographer and dancer.
We'll spend today together.
When I was 20, I realised I had to dance.
I can't run hurdles any more.
Even if I was meant to go to the Olympics
which my parents had believed.
That was suddenly gone. I knew I had to dance,
so I stopped immediately,
although I was very good.
I wasn't doing field and track for fun.
I wanted to be successful.
So then I went clubbing
at Club Neuschwanstein in Cologne
and got a taste for it.
I thought, what is this scene?
This is so me. I have to do it.
How I got into dancing was very normal for me
because I grew up in England.
My mother...
was always dancing, so it was normal for us.
On birthdays and stuff, us girls had to,
well, we didn't have to, but we did battle,
my siblings and my cousins.
Our family would form a circle around us
and the winner would be given a pound.
We would take the pound to the kiosk.
As I am addicted to sweets,
I would dance my heart out
and usually beat my brothers.
Yes, dancing is very normal for me
if I want to celebrate my joy or just any moment.
That's why I dance.
We're going to Atlas Pancakes now.
I like to eat there.
I'm meeting Culcha Candela's Johnny there.
Here we are already.
So come on in.
This is my girl. Atlas Pancakes, Forsterstrasse 5.
Surreptitious advertising.
How are you?
Great. Long time no see. Since Uganda.
I was on tour with Culcha Candela
for a long time, so I know
that Johnny's dad is from Uganda.
So I asked him if he was going to Uganda.
He said, yes, in January. I was like,
I've booked a flight, too. When do you fly?
He said, 3 January. Me, too.
I think you arrived one hour before me.
Yes, that's true. In Entebbe. We met up
and did great stuff together, no joke.
He took me to a youth centre in Kampala.
What's it called?
Sharing Youth Centre.
That's right.
Break-dance Project Uganda.
This is Nikeata's workshop
when she was teaching moves
to 50, 60 kids in Kampala.
We set up a project called Afrika Rise.
We support education at a school
with art and music.
We're moving to a new level where we focus
more on culture and exchange programmes.
So it was great that you were there.
I'm in love with Africa I have to say,
especially in terms of art they're far ahead.
I have to say this. I was shocked by that.
I thought maybe they'd be out of touch,
I know it sounds mean,
but ignorant and stupid as we are...
I arrived there and thought I'd be in the know
but in the end I realised I was the stupid one.
Are you shocked or happy now?
You startled me.
What up?
Where have you been, Lila Wolken shoot and so on?
I thought you'd come, that's why I went.
I love being creative.
It's always very stressful
because you always wonder if it's enough.
I'd love to fly, but I can't.
It's always exciting to see
what the artist will find.
If the artist is happy, I'm happy.
I'm Nikeata and I dance the way I dance.
Some people recognise me with a mask, too.
So I know I have my own style.
I have one Afrika Rise T-shirt here.
You can win this shirt
if you write a comment for us below
about what you'd love to experience
if you ever went to Uganda.
So, if you'd like to go there,
think about what you'd like to do there.
The coolest comment will win this shirt.
So, make an effort, be creative.
and move your body.
Do something for it.
