Let's go through some of the developmental pieces for birth to 2 months. We really like
to think of the first few months of life as the fourth trimester. This is probably a term
you've come across before and this is a huge transition time for babies where they're
going from inside of the womb where they have all of their needs taken care of to being
outside of the womb and being out in the world and having to cry and communicate with you
for every time they need to sleep and every time they need to eat and poop and burp and
all of these things. This is a real get to know you time with you
and the baby or really getting to know the baby's cries and what they mean and if you
don't know them all yet that's perfectly okay. The baby is really getting to know you
and it's your response to him that's really helping him understand his world. This is
a really important time to follow his lead. Let him sleep when he wants to sleep and feed
when he wants to feed. There are some experts out there that really
do advocate getting a baby on a schedule from the get go, we respectfully part company with
those experts because baby's little systems are still so underdeveloped at this age and
they really don't have the ability to self-regulate yet in a lot of ways. There's a very important
cognitive milestone that comes along down the road later, closer to three to four months
that allows the baby to do that learning a little bit more. At this stage he's not
quite ready yet.
