The appeal I think of an event like this is that teams of business people can come together
in a more social situation and as I understand it there are some crews here that are using
it as a team building day out for their senior management teams, which I think is a great
idea.
I’ve never been sailing before so it’s just a chance for all the sales guys and service
guys to get together and obviously work as a team on something which none of us have
done before to be quite honest, other than one.
It’ll probably be about the tenth time that I’ve been out with the IoD. During those
years I’ve worked for different organisations, but on each occasion coming out with clients
or staff, and using it as a day to build teams up, get people to know each other, have a
bit of fun, and also to get something out of it as well.
The IoD as a business offer a very broad range of services, but this particular event I found
really provided a good platform for me to bring staff who wouldn’t necessarily interact
with the IoD directly.
I mean we’re a UK national company, so we very fairly get to meet each other than sort
of once our twice a year, so I think it’s a good change that you know we could sort
of grow a bit closer as team, and hopefully today we’ll prove that.
When I was Managing Director of my own joint venture company, we came down as a team builder,
and the day was good, we got to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we had
a lot of fun, I liked the atmosphere so I came again the following year with a different
group and this year I’m bringing prospective clients, stakeholders and various other people
to make up a crew – hopefully this time we might come in a bit further up the field.
Today I’ve sailed a ship for the first time ever, and it was actually relatively straightforward
– if you listen to what is.. is being requested of you, and you sort of follow the rules and
learn to adapt very quickly, and I can see that being really useful for the team. The
reason I joined the IoD was primarily for the research facilities that they’ve got
in London, and so on and the facilities to use at Pall Mall and Birmingham, so I get
meetings there. I’ve only been a member for about three months, and this is the first
sort of big event I’ve been on too. I’ve been to a couple of networking events so far,
and intend to use this a lot more and can see the opportunity for my team, for team
building.
A good reason for joining the IoD is the networking side of it. As a Company Director, it’s
a fairly lonely position to be in, and to be able to speak to other Directors who have
similar problems, discuss those problems with them, and then back that up with the research
capabilities of the IoD it is good enough, but then you add in the social side of it,
it adds in another dimension.
The people that come on the sailing regattas are those that want to network, they want
to meet other people and they want to build new relationships, as well as have fun.
I think you certainly learn a lot about communication and I think it’s really important for everyone
to understand what they’re doing. There’s a completely different language on a boat
so you’re completely out of your comfort zone, so I thought that was really good.
The second and the fifth was Atlet 1 with Richard Willis.
It was a good, real good event, real good team building event, it was very good.
In second place is team IoD with Brian Campbell.
It’s been a really great day, greatly enhanced by the fabulous weather, we’ve been really
lucky.
So in first place is Atlet 2 skippered by Nick Willis.
APPLAUSE
I’d really recommend lots of people to come and do this, yeah it’s been a fantastic
day. LAUGH
