I’m Roger Anderson, Professor of Natural Sciences,
and I also hold a joint appointment in Columbia University
as a senior research scientist in biology at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
Here at the college my research and intellectual interests
are largely in applying cognitive and neurocognitive sciences through educational issues.
At Columbia my research is on a very different dimension
of the study of the physiological ecology of microorganisms,
especially how they are involved in the dynamics of ecosystems
the carbon biogeochemical cycles and other aspects of their important role
in maintaining a normal environmental balance.
Here at the college I have also taught courses in most of those areas in terms of content courses,
but currently as chair of the department I have a reduced teaching load
and I teach two types of courses either research seminar,
or a quantitative course in science education.
I would hope in fact perhaps see you in one of my courses,
and I would very, be very pleased to serve as your advisor
in case you came into the Science Education Program.
