today we're going to talk about a very common problem facing all car restorers
an *** leaking and rusty gas tax you see fuel tanks
rusts from the inside out as well as on the outside
the reason for that is as the fuel is pulled out of the tank by the engine
moisture-laden air goes in to replace it and then the moisture condenses out in
the fuel
and cause the tank to rush from the inside out lucky for us
Eastwood makes a system that allows us to seal the tank and make it as good as
new
but first of all you gotta get the old fuel out and get the tank out of the car
how to get the fuel out often there's a plug at the bottom that you can
take loose and then just drain the fuel into a waiting receptacle
but if your car doesn't have one of those you can get one of these siphon
hose is
that will do the job just fine you really step 12 been the Tankan
and and the other into the receptacle start pumping I don't take a hose like
this
and just suck on it to get the fuel started because it can get into your
mouth and gasoline is quite toxic and can burn the tissues have your mouth
now the next thing you need to do is to get the whole loose rust out on the
track and to do that I like to pour into Cano
nuts-and-bolts now you could use P gravel
but the problem with P gravel is it can give us a little flakes it can get into
your fuel system a mess it up
are just for the singer by or
okay have to put in the nuts and bolts
you want to use some eastwood's metal wash in hot water
to help clean the tank further let's put the
water appear and put in five teaspoons
all the metal wash I will just tear this up to make sure it's mixed properly
or
that should do it we'll put our final in here
and pour this mixture into the tank
health
just about president their K
help take our fun on picture tankers really dry because we need to put duct
tape over this whole
to keep the make sure from slashing out we need a slush all up in here too
just to make sure all we get all the rust
okay
that should do it and then how you need to do
screen to work your tank like a cocktail
shaker and sloshing around
get all the loose stuff
goes from there do that thoroughly on every surface
do up
then moved on to water
okay after use lotion on all the surfaces to make sure you've broken the
rustlers
your pour the water out you just keep repeating this process until the water
runs clear
as you can see here we still got a lot of work to do this is pretty messy
this tank is pretty cruddy inside the next we're going to pour in a court of
your attic acid and that can be found at hardware stores in swimming pool
supplies be careful with this stuff it's kinda nasty
and then you want to slash this around just as you did with the other stuff
and dump it out and then let the tank dry again
the next step is too poor and some with this
Eastwood rust remover that gets although
rest to the rust out that we didn't get out with the first two processes
how the final wash
this with acetone you want to put in a quarter acetone
and slush that around for a bit just to make sure you have absolutely everything
outta there by the time you tank should be downed a nice clean bright metal
how the final step is to pour in this
eastwood gas tank sealer that resists alcohol and fuel booster zonal seal all
a little pin holes in your tank
and make it last for years before that and sloshing around
put on a thin coat and then dump it out now you'll need about three containers
have this
to do the job completely the last step is we're gonna paint on some %uh this
cold galvanizing compound
it contains real zinc and will protect your tank for years
as you can see
you can restore your tank and we can pretty easily using eastward product
it's really quite simple
