My name is Gerry Hong and I’m a computer engineer and project manager here at SPAWAR
center. My team and I, we work on unmanned underwater vehicles, but those fall under
a category of autonomous systems. So basically robotics technologies that either are preprogrammed
or they have artificial intelligence to be able to think for themselves and make decisions
off of their environments. So the robots that we use are developed primarily for mind counter
measures for the military, but they have also had civilian applications that are very successful.
It’s already used in the real world, you know, in conflicts in the Middle East in unmanned
planes. I believe within the next couple of years those will be applied to the automotive
world too. Where you will see things like self driving cars, or cars that will not only
park themselves but you just type in an address and it will drive you home. For me, the most
exciting part about coming into work in the morning is knowing that I’m making a real
difference in the world. Working in the government you are surrounded by other people who also
want to do meaningful, important work. And being in that type of environment and having
that kind of shared goal and that shared mission I think is really exhilarating.
