In these days of modern video games, sometimes I just need a break from the repetitiveness
of recent titles. But when I need to escape modern games, I like to take things way back
to the days of the arcade. But one great thing about modern gaming is how easily it can bring
back games. Just one quick download and you can be playing Dig Dug in a matter of minutes.
Can we just take a moment and understand how great of a time we live in that that is possible?
Now through my years of growing up, my favorite arcade game was always Pac-man but Dig Dug
was a very close second. I’ve actually always been better at Dig Dug, though I’m still
terrible at it. But that is one of the things that classic games did better than today.
You can be really bad at a game and still enjoy the heck out of it. Try being really
terrible at an online first person shooter, and tell how much fun it is.
Well if you have never played Dig Dug, you are really missing out on some true greatness.
You are exploring a vast subterranean world, that is filled with monsters. Luckily you
have your trusty pump to deal with them. You can go near them, attach your pump and fill
them up until they explode. This will reward you with points. You can earn even more points
if you become a little bit more creative. There are boulders scattered around that can
be dropped on the monsters, and if you can crush multiple enemies with one rock, you
are in for a points jackpot. But you have to be careful because the monsters move quickly
and can easily end your days of exploring.
But this being on the PS3 means it is not just a straight port. The game is now sporting
some HD graphics. I mean, it is not like a brand new remake, but the HD does make everything
look sharp, crisp and clean. And it comes with online leaderboards, the modern version
of having your initials up on top the high scores list.
Dig Dug and arcade games will always be fun, on any system, at any time. They have a timeless
quality to them. If you are a long time fan, you need to pick this up. If you have never
played it before, then you really need to pick it up. Endless fun, on the cheap. What
more can you ask for?
