Can you give me reasons why you should not go to law school?
We have so many lawyers that they should be our leading export, because we have too many.
Lawyers make a lot of money.
A few top lawyers make a lot of money. There are so many attorneys that almost none of
them make a living.
Lawyers often charge several hundred dollars an hour.
The top one percent of any niche make a lot of money. However, there are so many attorneys
that they file a lot of frivolous lawsuits in the hope of a payday.
I thought that was the equivalent of the lottery.
While outsourcing started with manufacturing and telemarketing, it has moved on to the
professional services arena. There are now lawyers and accountants in India doing work
for a fraction of the cost of an American.
There is still plenty of work for lawyers.
Lawyers have been suing sites like LegalZoom for years because it cuts into their base.
And that’s despite a glut of lawyers because the job was sexed up by shows like Law and
Order everywhere.
Give me another reason not to go to law school.
You waste several years in law school and spend up to $100,000 to get a degree that
may not get you a job.
There are plenty of lawyer positions.
There were 25,000 new jobs for lawyers in 2013 and 70,000 graduates.
That’s why you see attorneys going into politics.
All those lawyers in politics is why we get 800 page bills that take lawyers to decipher
in the first place.
Enlightened self interest.
Or guaranteed employment.
I could work in non-profits promoting our cause legislatively.
In that case, you might as well get a BS in marketing.
I could get a job as a public defender.
And make peanuts.
I could get a job as an IRS auditor.
That’s about the only thing lower on most people’s list than a lawyer.
