I would like to welcome you with a little video - a trailer.
It's just a tiny impulse...
6010 disc cases
1 chain reaction
5000 have to topple... For a new WORLD RECORD!
It's just a tiny impulse! And the world's largest disc cases chain reaction begins!
Monday, 12th September 2011 - 2 PM, Dienzenhofer-Gymnasium Bamberg, Feldkirchenstraße 20-22, Gym 1
So, with this I would like to welcome you. Really nice that you are here!
Some teachers of this school also wanted to come, but they're still in a conference.
That's also why Mr Bauernsachs' speech will be a little bit later.
It's like that: holidays over, school begins again and there's a lot to talk about for the teachers.
Yes, the motto today, you have already seen it: "It's just a tiny impulse" - Very simple to understand.
One pushover and everything topples in the best case. We always have to use the if-form because there's always something that can go wrong. So the world record...
Hello there! Just have a seat!
So we don't have this world record yet! Everything here must topple...
...up to those pylons here. They mark the current world record and THEN, we do have a proper official world record.
In order to make it easier for you to understand: 6010 disc cases weigh 216 kilograms.
This is as much as 24 boxes of water bottles.
Flatly on the ground, the disc cases cover an area of 107 square meters, this is almost as big as a beachvolleyball field.
The maximum speed of the cases is 5.4 km/h, 1.5 m/s - this is already faster than a child with his bobbycar.
Stacked on top of each other, the cases are 751 m tall, this is a lot taller than Taipei 101 (the former highest building in the world).
So it's quite a lot what's behind me. You can also smell it, the cases do really have a stong smell of plastic.
But you have to stay here today although your life expectancy will be 2 years lower afterwards. I won't let you leave earlier.
I've been planning this since January. There were a lot of things to do. I did this while doing my Abitur and I'm really proud to welcome you today.
Yes, we don't do this just for fun. We also do this for charity. That's why I will sell the disc cases after the event.
I can't do this today because the cases have to be counted after the toppling today.
So if you're interested in buying some cases, you can write down your name in the lists next to the entrance and I will phone you then.
This would be really nice and as I just said: the money is for "Ärzte ohne Grenzen". So I earn nothing today!
So I just do this for my own pleasure. I don't want to earn something.
How do you come to the idea of setting up disc cases? That's what I've been asked today by all the media.
And therefore I have prepared a video. Have fun watching!
The domino hobby and the world record attempt
Creating chain reactions with dominoes has been my hobby for ages.
When I firstly saw Domino Day in 1999, the domino fever caught me and from 2005 on, my videos are also on the Internet.
Many people ask me: what's so interesting about setting up domino for hours and then seeing them topple in a couple of seconds?
My answer: Why does a 100m-sprinter month-long trainings just for 10 seconds of his life?
Also popular is the question whether I'm a little bit crazy... which I can clearly answer by YES!
And that's why I created the world's largest disc cases chain reaction here in Dientzenhofer-Gymnasium.
The current record is 5,000 set up by Stefan Schoppers in Holten (NL) on 07/06/2008.
And this has to be beaten here and today!
So there isn't a wall like the one you have seen in the video. This is simply because the cases break too easily while toppling.
I've tested this at home and one case after the other broke. So then, they cannot be sold anymore.
So, no wall today. Wouldn't have been good for my nerves, either! Very shaky, those walls.
So this is the spot for Mr Bauernsachs' speech now, but he's still in his conference, so we will skip this part.
And we will move on to the next point I have a video prepared for.
Of course, I didn't have the money for all those disc cases. I'm a very poor grammar school graduate...
So this was quite a lot of money for me, and that's why I was looking for sponsors.
Searching for sponsors
Searching for sponsors for the world record attempt was really interesting.
Everything began in January with 5 e-mails to firms that sell disc cases.
The answers were all negative or neutral - stupid standard e-mails.
...cannot support you...
And until March, five e-mails became 90. But I just got 19 answers. But for most of them, I had to write down the following in my table:
But there also were a few mails of relief. Joseph-Stiftung Bamberg sponsored the major part of the world record.
In addition to that, I found some private sponsors and the world record attempt was financially saved.
And I'm really proud to present you some of my sponsors now.
Exactly! Now it's time to say thank you and also for some presents. You can see some goodies under the table I'm sitting on.
So I say thank you to Hans Reuther for his contribution. He was not able to come today.
Also to Mrs Huml, you should all know her. She couldn't come because of an appointment.
Kann & Partner: nobody here either! So you see: a lot of interested people.
Brewery Griess, Car shop Heil and market garden Neubauer: nobody here either!
BUT: we have seen in the video that Joseph-Stiftung sponsored quite a lot. And we have Mr Schneider here, would you come to me?
Joseph-Stiftung really sponsored the major part. And I really would like to say thank you to you!
And... This is for you!
Can I donate this? - To whom shall this go? - Ärzte ohne Grenzen?
I don't make donations in order to get something back afterwards. It's really nice that you say thank you.
This is great and I appreciate it. I just want that the disc cases topple.
What I really like about this event is that you don't want to do it for yourself, but for "Ärzte ohne Grenzen".
So afterwards, you make the donation and that's fine then.
But I wanted to ask you something else. You did quite a lot for the event: on your homepage, etc.
And I wanted to ask if you would like to topple the first disc case.
I would like that Sister Regina Pröls, she is the Vicar General of the Franciscan-Sisters in Vierzehnheiligen.
So the worldwide personnel manager of the Sisters of Vierzehnheiligen.
We did, with the support of Tim, a tiny game on our homepage and she is the winner.
And I think it's her right to topple the first case.
Can I do this? Do I have to practise?
Those are the disc cases used in the project.
Just come forward so you can practise. Just topple it!
Not too weak, just try it!
Allright, you'll do it exactly like that later.
Is it okay if I do it? It's a huge responsibility.
Great! I can say that I found so many sponsors that I have 100€ remaining that go to "Ärzte ohne Grenzen" directly without any sales or so.
Yes, you are allowed to clap at this point!
I also would like to say thank you to the school for letting me into this hall during the holidays.
The caretaker (who couldn't come today) was really helpful. She will also get a present.
She really helped me a lot. The disc cases were where they had to be and this was really great.
And also to Mr Wagner (who will come later) for being responsible for the photos that GWR requires.
I have one video remaining. And I hope that the teachers will arrive then.
The video is about what you have to do in order to set up an official world record.
www.guinnessworldrecords.com is your address when you want to break a world record.
Getting the rules for a discipline is reaaaaaally easy.
Logging in
Searching and selecting your discipline
Entering your personal data and reading a loooot of safety rules that I do not want to show here due to timing issues.
No, we won't hurt animals during our world record attempt.
After some time of waiting, you will get the official rules that have to be followed.
Those are the rules for the disc cases world record:
1. The disc cases must have standard dimensions. We have Slimcases, so this is fine.
2. After the falldown, all the disc cases have to be counted again in front of the camera.
3. Everybody must be allowed to join the event.
4. The chain reaction must result from one single pushover.
5. No electricity is allowed to topple the disc cases.
After the start of the chain reaction, no other disc case may be touched.
In order to make sure that those rules are followed, Guinness wants to have two independent witnesses.
They have to supervise the attempt and write a statement afterwards.
And I now would like to present you those two witnesses for today.
So, those are the two gentlemen who are going to supervise the world record attempt today.
They also have to watch me counting later on.
This is Mr Grießinger and this is Mr Schnurr. Mr Grießinger was a criminal investigator and is now retired.
Thank you for helping me today. I hope that at least you will take your present.
Under no circumstances! I will also donate it for charity!
Would YOU like to take your present?
That's difficult now!
Otherwise I'll never get rid of my presents!
Yes, I'll take it, okay.
Searching for witnesses was not easy, so I'm really thankful that you're here today. And keep your eyes open!
It was not always easy - please have a seat again - ...
Oh, I'm sorry. Mr Schnurr... Sorry for not introducing you!
Sorry, Mr Schnurr is a parson at Erlöserkirche. That's right, isn't it?
Yes, at Erlöserkirche. And I'm also at Bamberg's university and care for the students religiously.
So two people in our everyday life who don't have anything to do with me.
And they will supervise the attempt and are allowed to write a statement afterwards. They're really looking forward to doing this :).
Yes, as I already mentioned, there have been some difficulties while setting up the disc cases.
Not just glorious times. I would like to show you this now.
After a week of relaxing, I came into the hall and I saw THIS!
We don't really know why this happened. But it looks like a tiny earthquake...
...because it's not just one case that became weak or so. And you're really happy when you see something like that!
And this morning, I came into the hall and saw ... that it had rained into the hall.
And it was really lucky that the disc cases remained standing. They're now in a puddle.
And yes, this was really shocking. But they're still standing and I hope that they won't remain standing when we start the chain reaction.
I still have to do one thing: we still have to wait for the headmaster. He said he would be here by 20 past 2.
In the meantime, I will remove the silver screen. So that you can see everything properly.
So, a short break now. You are allowed to talk and we will then be ready to start.
Whether it will be a world record or not. Nice that you were here.
And I would like you to come with me...
Careful!
Would you just count down from ten to zero? I have to sit down over there for the pictures.
Yes, let us just begin: TEN
(Countdown)
This is a new world record!
