It’s really soon that we have to put in all of our choices.
I’m a bit nervous because there’s a bit of pressure.
My mind is kind of darting everywhere.
And everyone comparing to school as well.
One of my parents wants me to do like
commerce and the other one wants me to do something to do with science.
I’m kind of thinking law, kind of thinking psych, or maybe I’ll go teach.
Everything really hangs on the exams.
Pressure.
I’m scared about like getting into what I want.
Making the wrong decision and then regretting that decision.
Probably not getting in.
Whether it’s the right choice.
Stuck in the wrong place or something.
A quarter of people, as soon as they go into a course they drop out and they’re like “Oh no.”
Holy crap, exams.
I was confused. I didn’t know really what I wanted to do.
Yeah, I was pretty stressed.
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do.
I don’t think anyone knew what they wanted to do.
You thought the world was going to end.
I’ve made up my mind for now. I want to do editing and publishing.
Civil engineering at uni somewhere.
Psychophysiology.
Psychology or dance, you know.
Mechatronic engineering and computer science.
I’ve changed my mind about six times.
I’m not too sure yet.
No, not yet.
We’re looking at a lot of TAFE courses.
All the pressure of SACs and then exams and stuff. I don’t
– I haven’t had the time to think about what I want to do next year for the preferences.
It’s just – yeah, not sure at all.
Really depends on you know, what happens the next few months I guess.
Not at all. Not at all?
No.
Yeah I’m pretty confident.
Yeah because that’s all the sort of stuff I’m interested in with computers and that, robotics.
Hopefully I’m heading in the right direction.
A couple of friends who know exactly where they’re going.
I can’t say that any of mine actually know what they want to do.
Most of my friends are pretty sure on what they want to do which makes it even worse.
I’ve probably got a tight-knit group of people who are wanting scores of about 100.
Most of them are pretty nervous.
I look for reputation.
Quality of the teaching.
How well the uni is known, what it’s known for.
Resources.
Class sizes.
Good lecturers that I understand
and different things that you can do on campus, not just like the academic side of it.
Courses that have a lot of like practical work rather than a lot of like studying and stuff.
So lots of placement and stuff is something that appeals to me.
I used to think it was really important. Like I used to be dead set on going to Melbourne,
but after looking at all the courses and going to open days I realised that it doesn’t really matter.
Yeah, it just depends whether the course suits you or not.
I think I’d like Swinburne, but anyway,
I’d feel like a small fish in a big sea if I went to Melbourne.
I always thought that it was just sort of dropkick type thing, but it just sounds like another step.
My parents would prefer me to go to TAFE because it’s a bit cheaper.
Yeah. I told my mum that I was thinking of going to TAFE and she was like “What? Go to uni.”
The TAFE at Swinburne, the course that I’m looking at
is a lot better than some of the uni courses that I’ve looked at.
Well I haven’t heard much about it, not as much as say Monash or Melbourne.
I went to open day and talked to people and it’s in Hawthorn which isn’t that far away from me which is good.
I’ve heard that it’s a really good atmosphere.
More heavily based on the practical side of things rather than theory.
It’s a lot more handy for me.
I love going through it because I like the campus.
I don’t really know that much about it.
Nice buildings, very good library.
I like that it’s close to Glenferrie Road.
Good little social life around here.
It’s a good opportunity for independence because they’re not on your back about anything.
So you just do it how you want it, study how you want.
It’s a nice little uni that everything’s close. You can’t get too lost.
Yeah I know. It’s a really relaxed environment compared to school with uniforms and stuff.
Yeah exactly. They don’t care if you eat a tin of baked beans…
A tin of baked beans. …whilst studying.
Good location.
Very independent learning environment, quality teachers, professional, very professional
and good facilities.
One of the things I really like about Swinburne is that I get to know my students.
It’s a high class uni without the snobbyness.
If you are passionate, if you would like to
achieve something in life and you don’t want to learn only from page five to page 55.
Yeah, I’ve got friends that are back at school and they say “Where do we go?” and
I just say “Well if you want these kind of subjects and this environment, come to Swinburne.”
Yeah I love the place. Probably the best decision I’ve ever done.
I’m happy with what I got into.
It’s fantastic and I’m so glad I went here instead of Monash.
Yeah it’s great. I love it.
