ERIKA: Hey guys.
I am here today at the New York Design Center, which is
16 floors of just the most beautiful furniture and fabric
and furnishings.
It's incredible.
And I'm here today, talking with the founder of blog
Design Milk, Jaime Derringer.
Now, a lot of people don't really know how to incorporate
modern furniture into their home.
But she does.
So we're going to talk to her about some of her favorite
picks and how to bring modern into your house.
How did you get into Design Milk and modern furniture?
JAIME: I love to share modern design with the world.
And I've got a boring day job.
And then I decided to just do something
creative on the side.
And this is what came out of it.
ERIKA: So we're here in Design Lush, which I think is an
amazing sample of super modern,
super cool, clean lines.
What are you loving right now?
JAIME: So I love the copper, brass, gold trend.
And I never thought I would say that, because I'm always
one of those girls are always wears silver jewelry and
everything.
And then I was like, oh, you now what?
It's really grown on me.
And because this has a geometric shade to it, that
just adds to it for me, because anything geometric,
I'm totally on it.
ERIKA: So what else are you loving?
Let's take a look.
Let's walk around.
JAIME: Yeah.
Let's check it out.
These lamps are actually made from wood.
The designer actually cast a mold, and so the outside is
cast and the inside is nice and shiny, so it gives off a
beautiful light.
But it's really unique and it brings a nice natural element.
ERIKA: So how would you use this in a space that didn't
necessarily have a lofty feel.
Could you?
JAIME: Yeah, absolutely.
In fact, I love how it looks here.
When you group multiples together, I think it really
makes it more impactful.
Any kind of odd number.
ERIKA: OK.
So tell me about this table.
JAIME: Marble is a huge trend right now.
And I've been seeing a lot of the light marble.
But this is dark marble, so I like it even more, because I
love the matte finish of this table.
ERIKA: That's cool.
JAIME: You see a lot of shiny black furniture, but having a
matte finish, it just looks really sleek.
ERIKA: Where to next?
JAIME: We're gonna go check out fabrics and rugs.
ERIKA: OK.
Let's do it.
JAIME: Going from hard to soft.
ERIKA: So we are here at Kravet.
We're looking at some amazing fabrics.
So what is it you love about these fabrics and upholstery?
JAIME: So the first thing I love about this fabric is that
it has nice soft lines.
The ikat fabric softens any kind of modern line, so it's a
great thing to pair in your house.
ERIKA: See, now, I feel like sometimes you wouldn't look at
this and think that this was exactly modern.
JAIME: No.
It's not.
It's more of a traditional fabric.
But the updated neon coloring, and if you pair it with the
bright modern furnishing, it absolutely works.
ERIKA: We're here at Kasthall.
And these rugs are by whom?
JAIME: Paola Navone.
ERIKA: Paola Navone.
JAIME: Yes.
ERIKA: So tell me why you're loving this.
JAIME: Well, first of all, we're
standing on a giant doodle.
So how cool is that?
So it's just a scribbled turned into a rug, so it's a
nice little centerpiece.
But she also did three other rugs for Kasthall in what I
think is just the coolest, newest trend.
This is kind of like a marriage between the ombre
trend and the '70s trend-- essentially, an updated,
modernized tie-dye.
This is not the rainbow tie-dye of your groovy parents
at Woodstock.
It's a sophisticated tie-dye.
ERIKA: OK.
So with everything that we talked about and what you've
seen today, how would you use these rugs with some of that
furniture and fabric?
JAIME: You could do this with the classic.
You could do this with some traditional furniture.
And I think if you love something, that's the most
important part about design.
There's no reason why you should follow trends if you
don't love it.
If you love it, then hold onto it.
It'll come back in style.
ERIKA: Thank you so much for coming by.
I had so much fun.
It was amazing.
JAIME: Thank you for inviting me.
ERIKA: And you had great tips and really cool things to show
us, so I had a really good time.
It was fun.
