In terms of the appearance--we are talking about photo-aging, damage from the sun, which is most obvious--it's sun protection.
Sun protection, starting as a child essentially, avoiding sunburns, regularly protecting yourself with
broad spectrum sunscreens in the summer months. The sunscreen aspect is very important.
Certainly in the United States, there have been changes in regulations recently, in terms of sunscreens.
We now have a change in labelling dirven by the FDA, that classifies sunscreens into under 15 and over 15.
Sunscreens that are broad spectrum, meaning blocking UVA and UVB--under SPF 15 have a claim of being able to prevent sunburns.
Broad spectrum sunscreens with SPF above 15 now have a claim of stopping sunburns, inhibiting the aging effect of the sun
and also protecting against skin cancer. These changes, I believe occur in the middle of this month.
We have to listen to that. I think that protecting against burning
important, but the UVA, the long wave legths of light are the ones that go deeper into the skin
cause this damage to collagen, which causes wrinkling. So it has to be broad spectrum sun protection.
The other aspect of things is that you have to lead a healthy life; you have to exercise, eat your greens
as your mom told you. What's probably good for your brain and heart is also good for your skin.
