our college athletes as intelligent as regular students they get admitted into
these universities well that's a question that marry willie
willing ham is trying to bring up especially because the fact that she is
in charge or was in charge a tutoring
student-athletes at UNC the University of North Carolina
now she noticed that while she was tutoring some of these athletes someone
didn't even know how to read
surgeon understand how they got accepted into the University in the first place
and there have been a number scandals in the past where professors have been
forced
to past student-athletes just so they can qualify
and continue to play sports for the University now CNN did a very very
lengthy piece on this topic and they did their own analysis to see
what the reading level is for the student athletes and their findings are
pretty disastrous the first
let's take a look at Mary willing Hamza now says that she did specifically
at the University of North Carolina she found that out of the 100
83 students that she reviewed sixty percent
read between the 4th and 8th grade level and eight-percent
to 10 percent read below a third grade level that's
yeah I would categorize as disastrous it because
what they are majoring in is football or basketball
and they just don't care and it's not necessarily their fault
it's the the teachers and administrators in the coaches
throughout their entire educational career who said there don't worry about
that
door Kostroun of a book prostrate on bass boats are
because that's what makes them the money okay at the end of the day that is what
is extremely profitable and we'll get to those numbers in just a second
but CNN also did its own independent analysis a bit because they wanted to
see if this is a widespread issue
they specifically focus on public universities because I with public
universities you I have these
open record laws they apply so they can access
SAT scores and ACT scores out what they found out of the 27 institutions that
actually replied to their request
was the following based on data from there requests and doesn't give
interviews CNN investigation revealed
that most schools have between 7 percent and 18 percent in revenue
%uh sports athletes who are reading at an elementary school level
some had even higher percentages up below threshold athletes okay
so a again been a disaster at look I have
anecdotal evidence from I and II CNN did a great job here
know which you don't hear me saying often but nice job on the sports report
here
we see the political reporting as well a a
person I knew though was actually tutor for USC athletes win
and her experience was 0 my
got a they don't know anything know that they can't
write an essay its route like it takes for
ever to help them figure out how to write at the San essay
now this content issues and then there's grammar issues etcetera
for example one other athletes who went on to the NFL by the way
who was assed I had a wee code
you know how would you help to overpopulation issue
a gain I forget it was the country or specifically allowed
and his thesis was stop getting latinos
to have babies she's like you no no
follow no don't don't write that well debate yeah I and maybe
and maybe go to politics as a republican i here I okay but
here to talk about a bit me she's like this could even hurt your career don't
like this
okay and then shipped to construct an essay and he could barely write
I mean it's a mess and here they studied at the CNN did
basketball and football per stars at
in her experience the worst was baseball players was baseball yeah she's like man
if you look
bass column football was bad wait till you get a lot of baseball
well I hear some other numbers that
CNN managed to find find the said that 10 percent revenue sport of with their
were reading below a fourth-grade level I'm so
that is actually found by University of Oklahoma press professor
Gerald gurneys you saw their up and so this has been studied by a number of
people and it continues to be a big problem
and what are the biggest issues is first ball yes you are passing athletes that
just
have not learned anything in high school
or in college so that means to grade inflation for professors feel pressure
to pass them
but then that I know quest puts into question the credibility and legitimacy
up your own institution right because you have students there
that deserve to be there they've worked really really hard to get there
and it's stories like this make headlines and people are going to
question whether or not it's worth sending their students are their
children tear University
that of court look at this sad reality is they're not
raining so like Stamford does the same thing right
maybe not that greeted hassle other schools too
but maybe your baby and they've got great athletes the center now I really
is why we don't give
that scholarships based on athletics so that's why they heard
sports suck even a real maybe play the right way but it was the right way to go
yet and if somebody went to an Ivy League school will you have some degree
of
confidence that they are indeed right and they just happen to be good acts
right
but when you get to the other schools if like
is somebody gonna say on SAT my kid Stanford do you see about their athletes
nobody saying that they're not saying about Michigan the nice thing about
North Carolina
on the other hand if I meet someone from severed
I'm sorry that I'm just randomly using them we can stick with UNC that had the
problem in the first place
ok by me somebody from UNC but no that's a nice cool right
and if they say have played baseball there by OCR what
what is it about baseball likewise the baseball players like somebody well
actually had the
at the professional level makes oscars lesser then went to college
moon because a lot of them skip college why at USC in my one anecdotal case they
happened to
not be as bright as even though other sports I don't know that's just what I
told me I would take it too seriously
but about all these at least they're not held to the same standards right
so well then you know that you got an issue and so UNC did respond to this
a mandate responded by having a number of excuses in my opinion
up here the excuse that they gave to CNN they said that some athletes don't aim
for high scores when taking entrance exams
looking only to score high enough to become NCAA eligible
UK they also said that many times low scores are indicators are learning
disability are you
which by the way let's focus on that for a little bit okay I think that it's
so irresponsible and insulting to people whether
actual learning disabilities to use that as an excuse for passing athletes that
have no business being passed
just to give you an example there are some um you know
a officials are our administrators and prefer professors they got interviewed
for this
and they said that you know they would get students
they did not have learning disabilities their athletes but they were basically
told by
you know officials at the University that hey you know treat this person as
though here she
he keep it real has a has a learning disability so you know you need to
at tend to him differently look when I played football in high school we had
one kid with a learning disability
antique just could he couldn't even remember the office a place
was not was it about school he could be couldn't he just couldn't do it right
so you just play defense it was a great tackle okay just keep you realize what
it was
reso worries perspective there was no learning disability
and look of course there are some smart players on the team now lot
okay us our brothers who played football a man sorry
3 under the bus there there were some who were smart okay
but the part the problem was the great majority %um
thought football was a lot so they didn't give a damn about history and
science and reading in Satara
and so that's a part of the issue here in high school it suddenly get paid more
in the high schoolers get paid anymore
saw the glamour are always a big star write a big football star bass will
start cetera
when they move on to college coaches like a year issue Louisville
for example maker a tremendous amount of money I'll
eat when 26.9 million dollars the University of North Carolina also very
profitable with theirs
athletics teams %uh sixteen point nine million dollars
those are the profits yeah the revenue the profits those schools get
so now you may 27 million dollars a profit are you me motivated to be like
own K a totally passed in the suree did
sure aidid I mean besides which is got a learning disability
yet know the real disability was throughout the entire process you let
him slide you let him slide
what are the kids are they mention the story and again it's not just about you
receive North Carolina there's 21
schools a CNN look at what are the kids want to learn how to read
cuz you want to read about himself in the paper when he did well when
K so we gotta fix the system and
look I love those courses much as anybody else does and I wanna play great
and I wanna watch right but I also when don't want those guys to go up to be
idiots
right and if we we're not doing him any favors by constantly passing them
and giving them easier standards right because a lot of them last
about two and a half years in those weeks and then there
book right you burn through the money and then you can hardly read
then what are you going to
