Hello! This is how I shade skin using Paint Tool SAI. Ive already laid down my flat colors and now I create a new layer above the skin layer. Then I check the clipping group box. This allows me to only color on the skin layer.
Next I use the Lasso tool to select where I want to add my shading.
I use the airbrush tool (size 250-300) to shade. I press harder on the pen on the areas I think it should be darker and have less pressure the closer I get to the light source.
Then I repeat all over the body. This is the first layer of shading.
Because I made these stocking sheer, I had to shade the skin and then go ahead and shade the stockings so that the shadows would coordinate. Then I just lower the opacity on the stockings layer so they appear to be opaque.
Back to shading!
This is was recorded in real time, so I apologize if this part is boring ;_;
Now we add the second layer of shading. This is where I find the parts of the skin where the shadows are the darkest. I add a third, darker skin color to these parts. This will give the picture more depth.
I actually use this process when shading the whole picture, whether its hair, clothes or skin. The various layers of shading make the picture pop just a little bit more.
Just experimenting with some blending techniques on this part, it didnt work out, so just ignore it.
After the failed experimentation I do what I usually do, use the blur tool. Try to leave some hard edges if you can though. You dont the picture to look too soft.
Repeat. Again and again. >_>;;
Then I ran out of time on my recording device! (But it was free) You get the idea though, Im sure. You can follow me on Facebook at Facebook.com/kriscomics to keep up with my comics, classes I teach, and convention appearance. Thanks for watching!
