Hello I’m Becky with some important information about your recycling collections. We’re
improving the way your recycling is collected. For example you no longer need to sort your
waste within your red and yellow lidded boxes. So less fuss and more recycling!
The red lidded recycling box is for cardboard and paper. That means catalogues and directories,
wrapping paper; not the foil kind though, magazines, junk mail, cardboard food packaging,
cardboard boxes; no bigger than 50 centimetres by 50 centimetres, toilet roll tubes and cereal
boxes.
Unfortunately you can’t put in drinks cartons, tetrapaks, wallpaper, plastic bottles or polystyrene.
The yellow lidded box, or your old style blue box is for plastic bottles, cans and glass.
Now this means plastic detergent, milk and pop bottles, food and drink cans, biscuit
tins, empty aerosols, clean foil, foil pie cases, takaway containers, glass bottles and
jars.
Please no margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, plastic trays or paper.
Remember you no longer need to sort your waste within these boxes.
You can recycle textiles like clothes, shoes and belts if you bag them up. Just place them
next to your recycling bins.
If you live in a food waste collection area you can use your green food waste container
for all cooked and uncooked food including fruit and veg, eggs, peelings, meat, fish,
bones, leftovers, tea bags and coffee grinds.
But please don’t use it for food packaging, plastic bags, general waste or liquids.
Remember to use biodegradable bags provided by the council. Now if you run out of bags
you can just pop a note for the crews on the top of your container on collection days.
If you live in a brown bin collection area you can use your brown bin for garden waste.
That means pretty much everything for the garden including leaves, dead plants, grass
cuttings, small branches, twigs, hedge clippings, wind fallen fruit, weeds, cut flowers and
house plants. You can even use it for your real Christmas tree. Providing you can fit
it in of course.
Now, please no foil or kitchen food waste.
Any waste that you can’t recycle should be put in your grey bin. Now waste from your
grey bin can cost a lot more to treat and can still end up in a landfill site so try
to reuse, reduce and recycle as much as possible. Remember you can recycle even more of your
waste at your local household recycling centre. You can find more information in the Simply
Recycling handbook or online at www.preston.gov.uk/simplyrecycling or call the relevant number on your screen
now for general enquires, bulky collections and graffiti, litter lines or skip hire.
Now I must say a big thank you to all of you for your hard work. We’re already recycling
33 per cent of all of our waste in Preston but in Lancashire we’re committed to recycling
50 per cent of all waste by 2012. We hope that you will continue to help us in this
effort.
