All right Vanessa. Are you ready to get started?
I'm ready to get started!
Okay, let's get started.
We are going to try and complete this project over a long weekend.
We are going to try and finish it no later than Monday afternoon.
We'll see how it goes.
What we did today was stage a garage.
We took everything down, all the shelves.
We want to do a good job it getting
the cabinets cleaned and deglossed.
So all the cabinets have been emptied,
cleaned and deglossed.
Now we're getting ready to start step number two which is the
first base coat.
One of the things we did this morning when we were getting ready to degloss
we were cleaning cabinets themselves. We found that
using the liquid dish soap they use
to for fish or
to clean birds when they get oil on them
didn't work as well with the cabinets getting clean as
we would have liked.
So we found this degreaser
that we've used. And this degreaser worked so well so that the degreaser
saved us a great deal of time
when it came to the deglossing because that's such a good job removing
the dirt and grime
from it.
As you can see, everything is sanded, taped off and ready to go.
However, this isn't a huge kitchen. Let me show you what my problem is right now.
The adhesive base coat that comes with the kit.
Rustoleum says to put it on like frosting.
We had enough to cover just this area of the counters.
There just isn't enough of the base coat.
The whole purpose of the project was to get the cabinets and countertops done over a
long weekend. Right now we're on saturday evening.
Monday is a holiday. I'm trying to get this completed by monday and time is of
the essence. So we are going to see how it goes.
My beautiful wife is off to get another kit,
so that we can do this one little cabinet countertop that's here and I do believe
if I read correctly from one of the bloggers that
Rustoleum recognizes that this is a new product
and there probably isn't enough base coat in there.
This is a holiday weekend and they are not opened right now.
I will call them this week and see what their response is.
The countertop transformation base coat in the first kit was far too thin.
It didn't cover well. We ended up spending a great deal of time doing rework
trying to fix the countertops. It still takes tremendous amount of work
to get the countertops smooth and presentable.
Unless you're an expert
there are going to be some flaws that you have to go back and cover up.
These flaws are very difficult to have blend in
with the rest of the counter.
The cabinet transformation is
much more forgiving.
The 600 grit orbital sander actually worked so well
taking off and smoothing the surface of the countertops
we used to for the remainder of the transformation.
While the orbital sander saved us a tremendous amount of time,
if you elect to do so,
do it at your own risk.
It does take a very light and steady hand,
but, for us, it worked extremely well.
Rustoleum was closed on Sunday but they were open on that holiday Monday.
I spoke with the customer service representative named Nicole.
She was extremely helpful and asked about the problems we were having.
I give Rustoleum a lot of credit
because nicole as a customer service representative
who wanted to make sure that we had a good representation of her company
provided us a full refund for the countertop
transformation kits. As a former corporate executive,
I appreciate any company that allows their customer service representatives
to do their job.
So I give Rustoleum and their CEO a tremendous amount of credit.
I cannot say enough kind words about professionalism and helpfulness
Nicole provided.
