Hello I'm Davina of sheepandstitch.com and today I'm going to show you how to pick up
a dropped stitch from stockinette stitch and garter stitch. So what we've got here is a
little dropped stitch. It has fallen down the work and it's all alone down here. We're
going to rescue this little guy. I always think of dropped stitches as a child that's
fallen down a well that's ignored. Lassie has forgotten him and it's all alone in this
well. But we're going to save this little guy. We're going to save Timmy. We're going
to bring him back to his stitch family up here on the needle. Alright, so let's do this.
Let's save Timmy.
What we're going to do - and, oh yeah, I should mention that we are on stockinette stitch
right now. So how you rescue a stitch of stockinette stitch is different from how you rescue garter
stitch. Okay, so now we're going to rescue Timmy in his stockinette situation.
So I'm going to take my needle and put it through this stitch. I'm going to put it through
Timmy. You can see here that there are these strands of yarn. These are like ladder rungs,
and we're going to bring Timmy up the ladder. He's going to climb the ladder. So how we're
going to do this is I'm going to take my needle that's holding Timmy, and I'm going to bring
it underneath one of these ladder rungs, the one at the very bottom. Now I've got Timmy
here and the ladder rung here. And I'm going to bring Timmy over the ladder rung here.
So now Timmy has climbed one ladder rung. Cool! He's getting closer to his family. I'm
going to do that again. I'm going to take my needle and bring it underneath this ladder
rung here Then I'm going to take Timmy and bring him over the ladder rung. So he's slowly
climbing up closer to his family. I'm going to do that again. So, underneath the ladder
rung, bring Timmy over it. And we're going to do this one last time. There we go, under
this ladder rung, and we'll bring Timmy over it.
Now if you don't know why I'm calling this stitch Timmy then I suggest you watch Lassie,
and you'll figure it out pretty quickly.
So now we're on the same level as all of the stitches here and we'll reunite Timmy with
his family. We'll put him back on the needle. So I'm going to take these stitches off the
needle and be careful not to drop them. I'm going to take Timmy and put him back on. Woohoo!
Mission complete. We've rescued Timmy. So I'm going to take the rest of these stitches
here and just put them back on. And look at that! Timmy is back with his family. We should
play some Sister Sledge here. Now you can see that our fabric looks amazing. It looks
like nothing happened. No one fell down a well. What well? Totally unmolested. It looks
great.
Okay, so that' show you save a dropped stitch on stockinette stitch. Now let's look at garter
stitch. Garter stitch is a different story. It's a little similar, but it involves a purl
stitch. That's how garter stitch differs from stockinette stitch. On garter stitch you've
got one row of purl and one row of knit. Whereas on our stockinette stitch it was all knits.
So let's take a closer look at our garter stitch.
Right now, Timmy is down here. He's on a purl row right now. Let's take a better look at
Timmy, make him a little bit bigger. Timmy is on a purl row, and as you know garter stitch
is made up of one row of purl and one row of knits, one row of purl, one row of kits
and it just alternates like that. So Timmy is on a purl row and his next row is a knit
row. So, we're going to bring Timmy up this ladder the knit way, which is what we just
did for stockinette stitch. We can see this ladder rung here, and we'll do the exact same
thing we just did previously. We're going to impale Timmy here and we'll take our needle
and go underneath the next rung here, and then we'll bring Timmy over this rung. There
we go. Cool. So we've just brought Timmy up one rung, and he's on his knit row. So the
next row is a purl row, so Timmy needs to be purled onto this rung, not knit onto this
rung. We'll do this by bringing our needle in from the top rather than from the bottom,
which is what we've been doing.
So, I'm going to pinch Timmy to make sure he doesn't fall any further I'm going to take
my needle off and bring it down from on high, from the top like this. I'm going to go underneath
this rung and I'll put Timmy back on the needle like this. I'm going to turn my work around
so I can see it a little bit better. You can see I have the rung up here and Timmy on the
bottom. So I'm going to bring the ladder rung up top over Timmy, and I'll take Timmy over
that ladder rung. I'll pull that tight and turn my work around so you can see that now
Timmy has climbed onto the ladder rung and he's done so on a purl stitch. You can see
this little bump. So Timmy has completed a purl stitch up the rung. Let's keep going
up the ladder. We just did a purl stitch. The next row we'll do a knit stitch. We'll
take our needle and go underneath this rung and we'll take Timmy over this rung. There
we go. So he's just climbed up one knit stitch. We've got this last rung here. This is a purl
row, so Timmy needs to be purling up this ladder rung, so we're going to pinch Timmy
so he doesn't fall. We'll take our needle, come up from the top, go under this ladder
rung and drop Timmy onto the needle. I'll turn my work around because I can see it better
this way. I'm going to bring my ladder rung on top, over Timmy. Then I'll pull Timmy over
that ladder rung. So woohoo! I'll turn my work around, and you can see that Timmy has climbed up this garter
stitch, and he's on a purl stitch and that matches the other stitches on this row, and
that's perfect.
I'm going to take these stitches off the needle and put Timmy back on. Woohoo! He's safe now.
He's been saved from his sad loneliness in the well. So let's get these stitches back
on. Everyone's back on the needle. Big happy family. Pretty cool, huh? It looks like nothing
happened here. No one fell, no well. What well? Totally cool. So there you go. The next
time you drop a stitch just perform one of these rescue missions, your fabric will look
amazing, and it'l be like nothing happened.
