By the way, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are the first games made entirely in 3D,
so you had to represent all sorts of things three-dimensionally.
Considering all the games that Game Freak has made so far in the Pokémon series,
I think these were full of new challenges. How about that?
At the start, with hardware like Nintendo 3DS, we thought we should make 3D models.
We thought we had to try it.
On stage, you explained the process of turning Sugimori-san's illustrations into 3D models.
Yes. Unlike before, we made 3D models from a cross-sectional view with more detail than
anime-style character designs, and we drew illustrations for models,
so the work going from 2D increased a lot.
Then, when we turned those into models, each Pokémon had different bones.
Their bone structures are different.
Yes. They're not real creatures, so we tried a lot with regard to what we should use as a standard
and how they fly and so on. We had a lot of fun, but it was hard.
Instead of making them realistic, however, we wanted them to be cute and vibrant,
so I think it's good the way we stayed close to Sugimori-san's illustrations.
I think the visuals are of higher quality than ever before without being purely photorealistic.
I found them very refreshing to look at.
