CoirMat.com’s natural fiber mats contain 100% natural coconut husk fiber. Since these
mats are made through simple, sustainable processes, they may seem easy to make. Actually,
harvesting and preparing the coconut husks is a labor-intensive process.
The most common method of coconut harvesting used by small producers is also the most environmentally
friendly.
Here, a worker at a small farm in Sri Lanka climbs a coconut tree to cut the coconuts
down. In order to climb the trunk of the tree without injuring himself, he uses a piece
of rope to anchor his feet.
Once he has reached the top of the tree, the worker throws the coconuts down to the ground
below.
This method of collecting coconuts can be dangerous and time consuming. For this reason,
some producers have started using hybrid varieties of coconut trees to make the process faster
and more cost efficient.
Many of these hybrid coconut trees are bred for shorter heights. This makes collecting
coconuts an easier process for workers on these small farms.

Once the coconuts are harvested from the trees, they are sorted into piles where they will
then be taken to the next step of the coir production process.
