it's thursday in time for world view with dennis campbell dennis is editor in
chief of the u_k_ progressive magazine the new book magic underwear in the
situation room deals with mitt romney's mormon faith how's the book doing dennis
it's a surprisingly very well honored by looking at the uh... the sales figures
in the climbing each week which is always good
party does the in both the touch a bit of a note when you start talking about
someone's religion
and i do try to stay with much as i can from both of the pure religious aspects
the question i wanted to have answered is is
do we want to be in a position where a person who has been a senior leadership
position any church
when panda
in the highest in the senate
uh... office in the land in the united states as president nine states remember
back to nineteen sixty
there was a furor record john f_ kennedy in the fact that he was catholic
and would he be taking his orders from the pope of rome and i think these are
fairly significant questions that i try to pose and have answered them courses
that long
and it was a number of followers on twitter is also going up
by over a thousand last week and a half so i think there's something going on
there as well
all say allied there's also something going on in new york city which is where
the cat united nations general assembly is taking place
we heard from particularly right wing media and the lead up to this
criticism because president obama wasn't going to be meeting with benjamin
netanyahu and with other leaders doing any one on ones
at the same time than the kind of counter to that is well they have phones
and they can kind of talk anytime so what's really defense what's the big
focus on this meeting before we get to that we had a couple of interesting
appearances uh... we had uh... uh... british prime minister david cameron
visiting david letterman and getting asked some very basic questions about
british history which which was an interesting dynamic if you haven't seen
it
and then you're also talking to me about the uh... daily show with jon stewart so
everybody making the rounds
there are indeed a theodore was all the daily show and he was uh...
if you join was talking with with john john astin point-blank
he said you know how important is it that uh... he didn't get a one-on-one
meeting this time through with the president is a lot of orbital
and i think that pretty much sums up the illegal one one meetings were extremely
important
in the early days the rocks are days when you know he was seems just
recipient of the nobel peace prize he won the election by nine million votes
he was out there of making some very strong foreign policy moves in the end
of the g_m_ the g twenty
being received very very well world stage but even when sarcos he was
running for reelection friend t blew off meeting so it's kind of a political
story of the day mean that's being pushed
and frankly not very well by the g_o_p_
addresses anything that's going to have any political significance of the border
issues of water-borne
and they've been ignored by both sides in the selection right so in here in the
u_s_ worth seeing a desperate effort from the right to make the meetings and
issue but what you're saying is
in europe it doesn't seem like the average news consumer nor the
dignitaries themselves seemed to really be putting that much focus on these
one-on-one meetings
lessees so you know you always have the ability because you have established
relationships now over three and a half years
too big of a telephone as you said at the top of the sermon
and if there's an issue you have a discussion
there's no need to go through the formality of pseudo state visit in which
you have
formal meetings and and uh... translators and
you know the whole uh... photography
exercise for the press
mates for those of the broader issues of the ones that that was just trying to
change and and you know the status of where the world is all in terms of of
drugs and spying in internet security at all these things these are the bigger
issues of the day
and really good for to earlier this week david to vienna uh... of program over to
lanza college which is part of the united world colleges group about
thirteen colleges around the world
and uh... i was on the dies with terry waite melissa terry waite
uh... who was held hostage for five years and let alone
discuss all of the issues in the way that they're being handed today and how
the remember back in the nineteen eighties
and quite frankly were all very frustrated
the amount of trivia that passes is news today
and nobody's really addressing the serious issues in the world is going on
up abed yen speaking of which let's talk a little bit about rodney brian foreign
policy because we've seen
we're going to have the day add believer having one of the three debates here is
going to be a foreign policy center debate
and hopefully there we will have to see something specific from mit romney about
the drones about new so on and so forth what's the feeling
outside of the u_s_ particularly in europe about the lack of knowledge about
what a romney presidency may mean for foreign policy that affect those
countries
let's talk to a number of analysts here over the last couple of this was united
of course discuss the top of the of the week before we go into the side
i want to get their impressions and quite frankly the consensus over here is
that
the release of the presidential level the braces over
of the really honestly believe that uh...
you know brock obama would have to do something incredibly stupid to lose
that all think the turning point was the forty seven percent video
and what that has done the repre boulevard of harm that has done his
candidacy is is beyond description at this point
and uh... you quite frankly when we listen to them talk about foreign policy
is clear they have absolutely no clue
you go live back to his visited israel talking about a level of security and
support for that nation
that does not exist today
never has existed because the united states has taken its role
as a peacekeeper in the region fairly seriously
and has tried to really walking right down the middle and in fact walking it
down the middle is what has gotten them into so much trouble
with the arabs freeing up prices because they've not seen
all of the changed that was coming
and been in a position to change the way the day we acted and quick enough so
anne did states absolutely phenomenal it's almost a cold war nineteen
eighties nineteen seventies nineteen sixties mentality
that ronnie ryan record
sent you a little bit of almost literally that dennis with with mitt
romney now i think at least two times saying russia is the number one
geopolitical well which is just an incredible comment to make it almost
seems like quite literally
romney ryan is operating as if we are in the cold war
indeed they are in a find them
the the
of hypocrisy
of raw meat to be absolutely frightening and it came up just a few days ago
that he's one of the lead investors in the company call secom which does all of
the
oil exploration for the the chinese state government now he's been investing
over and over and done for a number of years
only to find out that now of they are the ones that are behind the development
of the huge
natural gas field in iraq
so technically romney's doing business with iran and when you put that on the
table
and you look at all the other issues out there you've got
you know i've just been through
one of the most extraordinary experiences as a journalist over the
last five years
in which i've been talking about the humanitarian suffering of a group of a
runny refugees stuck in the desert
basically being shot at by ironic and iraq the andy k
they were on the terror once list of the state department last friday they were
taken also that list
and they've been off the list in the u_k_ you
and there's been a humanitarian crisis is the desert but the three thousand
four hundred people
i wrote an article for truth out doubt or about three years ago and literally
got thrown under the bus by them because
the iranian property and the ministry came in and started
this incredible campaign of of comments and counter comments
and uh... all the sudden i was out of the job of that having written about
election fraud antibody
and all the other thing so
we've got to pay more serious attention
to all the things happening in that region we can't just stop all and expect
that they're going to suddenly love us and and as uh...
rumsfeld said
uh... you know have they'll be followed petals on the streets grievances heroes
ray and i had to talk about last week that have been looking at that poll that
people in europe particularly would be very displeased with the potential mit
romney presidency
we're gonna keep an eye on the polls were going to keep that conversation
going though i i i guess what we can gather from this is
no one-on-one meetings not very significant to anybody other than
republicans in the u_s_ trying to make a big deal out of it
no nice thing is is that i've got my absence e balcony ready to post tomorrow
so
from u the election is over also you still vote in the u_s_
as to the u_s_ into the building at citi dot or forty years and what state do you
voted
well i live in tennessee that was my last legal residents of that sort of
incredible and while we were down thing every day this is actually a but but but
but alright dennis campbell editor in chief of the u_k_ progressive magazine
check out the book magic underwear in this situation room thanks as always
dennis we'll talk tonight
