s tell us uh... your argument is that
the internet essentially uh... our capacity to go online
really should be treated like uh... utilities and basically like electricity
was uh...
uh... hundred years ago
well thanks for the question uh... yes
people may not know this but electricity was considered to be a luxury hundred
years ago and ninety percent of farmers didn't have it and it was controlled by
large tracts
that had combined to control more than eighty five percent electricity
distribution market
today's you can't
starting a business or get a job or get it
good education or get access to the most modern healthcare resources
with out having i wired connection to the internet
eighty three percent of people who have smartphones
also have wide connections
uh... what happened is that
for nineteen million americans they can't get white expected any cost
because it just isn't available where they are
i thirteen americans don't subscribe to a wired home connection
many because the cost some because they just don't understand it's relevant
and compared to other countries prices are quite high united states
capacities pretty low
um... this is all happened because over the last ten years or so we've
completely deregulated defector leading to
no competition
in a market for wired internet access and by the way also
a low levels the competition for wireless
access president
t an eighteen t really dominate outfield
thano real competition
amil oversight which is
uh... a terrible combination for something that americans me just like
clean water and electricity from the serbs that way i must tell us what did
happen with electricity because you have a situation where
um... it's now obviously in some respects his discipline not
or a private entity to provide universal access
those last ah...
a couple of miles or in some cases you know back then tens of miles were just
simply not worth laying down
to the copper as a word though wire
um... to deliver electricity dispute give us a a notion of exactly what the
u_s_ government did at that time
problem operator key level suffered very far flung rural areas the federal
government back in their twenties and thirties encourage the development of
rural cooperative that would help
uh... municipalities in community help themselves to provide electricity where
the incumbents founded on economic
to serve those areas
so electricity roll area it's we encourage world cooperative
and then in urban areas
made sure that wholesale prices were regulated and that
i've standard for electricity was provided uh... for everybody so that
we could operate on a mission devices we want to use the fast-forward
got a very similar situation now for very high speed internet access
in most parts of the country your only choice for a world-class wired internet
connection is your local cable monopoly
and that company isn't subject to very much oversight is
and four other part of the country they're just underserved particularly
rural areas
uh... so we've got a similar problem and absent the competition in areas where
competition is possible
and then absence of service in areas where they companies skillet an
economical to go there
this is leading to add very large party problem for the united states because
everything we wanted to
from client climate change too
uh... you know in proving healthcare to improving educational resources around
the country depends on having unreliable first-rate uh... wired internet network
around the country
