Hi this is Matt Saternus for Plugged In Golf. Most recreational golfers have the goal of
breaking 90, so in this video I'm going to give you a fool proof plan for doing that
your next time out. Let's get plugged in.
The first key to breaking 90 is realizing that it isn't that difficult. On a par 72
course, shooting 89 means you're going to make 17 bogeys and 1 par, and everyone who
aspires to break 90 has made pars and made bogeys before, so it isn't that difficult.
That said, I'm going to give you two simple rules and a simple, easy to follow game plan
that's going to guarantee that you break 90.
The two simples rules of my system for breaking 90 are "Don't 3 Putt" and "Don't Take Any
Penalty Strokes." That means you're not going to hit the ball in the water, you're not going
to hit the ball out of bounds, and you'll see in my game plan that I'm going to make
it very easy to do those two things.
Generally speaking, my game plan for breaking 90 is that you should hit every green in regulation
plus one and then two putt. That means all you have to do is make 1 putt out of 18 holes
and you'll break 90. So let me go ahead and break that down a little bit more. The first
thing you need to do is get rid of all the clubs in your bag that go more than about
160 yards, so you're not going to take your driver, your three wood, your hybrid, or your
long irons. Now, why are we going to do that? We're going to do that so we eliminate those
penalty shots. Most people who are trying to break 90 and have never done it struggle
with their driver so instead of fighting the driver and trying to make that work, we're
just going to keep the ball in front of us. Every tee shot we hit is going to be a 7 iron
or 6 iron or 8 iron, some club that goes about 150 yards, and we know we can hit into the
fairway. From there, we're going to hit a second shot of about 150 yards and then you're
going to hit a simple wedge shot onto the green and two putt. Now, that's basically
the recipe for breaking 90. Again, all you have to do is make 1 putt or on a short par
3, perhaps you hit the green in regulation and two putt or on a shorter par 5 you can
get there in three. There are lots of different ways to make that one par. But the big plan
overall is hit a mid iron off the tee to keep it in the fairway, advance the ball towards
the green, and then get on in regulation plus one and two putt.
