So it’s been a while since I’ve been back to England but I’m really looking forward
to going home and having some good old English food.
English food? Fish and chips.
Well, there’s a lot more to English food than fish and chips. - Really? - Come on.
- Yeah! - Isn’t English food all mashed potato and . . .
Well, you know we’ve got our traditional dishes like, you know, shepherd’s pie, which
is mashed potato and meat and vegetables, and, steak and kidney pie and things like
that. Cornish pasties and all those things . . . But then, you know, these days, English
. . . the restaurant scene in England is really buzzing. There’s lots of international
restaurants, lots of international food having influence on English food, lots of . . .
The best Indian food I ever had in my life was in London.
Really? Hands down. In east London, there’s a street
where they just - Brick lane - holler out Yeah, Brick Lane, where they just holler out
deals and you go in there and . . . liquid seeps from every orifice in your face but
you’re in Heaven. That sounds dangerous.
That doesn’t sound very nice. No.- I’m telling you - I don’t know if
I want to go to that restaurant. I’m telling you it’s wonderful.
It sounds good to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love spicy food. - Yeah - But that’s Indian
food, it’s not British food. Yeah.
Yeah. Well, no but actually, actually, there are
some what you might think are Indian dishes, which are actually English dishes. Like, Chicken
Tikka Masala was invented by the Indians for the English.
No. Yeah, yeah.
Oh yeah, it’s, it’s England’s national dish.
So now you claim it as your, as your own. Yeah. It may have a few Indian s-
It’s like American pizza. Yeah. It may have a few Indian spices in it but
it’s our d-, you know it’s our dish and it’s the number one food in England.
Really? - Yeah. - And if you go to any Indian restaurants in
The States the number one dish ordered and the number one that they . . . advertise is
Tikka Masala. Really?
So you, you’ve been eating English food for longer than you knew.
Yeah, yeah really. I didn’t know that. And I don’t know if you guys have ever had
one but a steak and ale pie in a proper British pub . . .
Very good could be one of the best things I’ve ever
had. That . . . fluffy pastry, and, the gravy . . .
It’s not the health option, - sounds good - though, is it? It’s not, good for the
arteries, maybe. It’s good for the soul.
Well, it’s better than a Big Mac, I bet. Did you know that outside of France, London
is the place that’s got the most Michelin stars? You know Michelin . . . ?
That’s not true. No. - That’s not true. I read that just the other day.
What about New York? Surely . . . It’s incorrect. It’s absolutely Tokyo.
Really? Absolutely.
Well then it must be after Tokyo then, it’s London. But it’s just strange that everyone
criticizes English food but then, you know, we do have a lot of restaurants with Michelin
stars. So, We may not be number two,
Of course it’s one of the international capitals of the world.
You do have a lot of famous, a lot of celebrity chefs.
Yeah, like Jaimie Oliver. I think he’s famous in Australia, too.
Yes, he is. And then we’ve got Gordon Ramsey, - Gordon
Ramsey - who’s quite, he’s famous in the States.
Famous all over the world. He’s that, he’s that rude one, isn’t
he? Well he, yeah, every other word is a swear
word. But his shows are quite . . . I’ve been watching Kitchen Nightmares, it’s quite
good. He, like, goes into a restaurant that’s failing, and he, he, he tries to, help them
and made the restaurants, success-, a success, which is quite interesting. He doesn’t usually
manage- And, you know, I wouldn’t trash talk the
fish and chips because such a simple dish . . . the wonderful fish and the fresh chips
. . . that can really make a day. Oh yeah.
I think I want one today. Oh yeah, me too.
Hey I can . . . come back to my place, I’ll make some fish and chips.
Got it!
