My passion for the profession has kind of consistently grown, it never really subsided.
My story starts with just a high school guidance counselor that said “You’re good at math,
you should major in accounting.” Didn’t take too many accounting classes to realize
she wasn’t on the ball with her job, didn’t know what she was talking about because it’s
not sitting there with a pencil, it’s not just crunching numbers all day. We were really
putting a focus on understanding what our clients businesses were about and how they
operated and we really became, I don’t want to say allies or advocates for them, but trusted
professionals for them and it was a really different relationship than I expected going
in. What I like most about my job is probably just, and you wouldn’t expect this, but
it’s the diversity of opportunities. Public accounting is a great place to kind of figure
out what you want to do. I mean I started here, I didn’t really know what to expect.
I knew I’d work hard and learn all these accounting rules but what I didn’t realize
was that I’d get exposed to so many different businesses and so many different industries
and so many different types of people that work in them. And if I ever got to a point
when I decided public accounting wasn’t for me, I don’t anticipate getting there,
but if I ever got there I’ve seen all these different things and how they work and maybe
I’ve found something else that’s more interesting to me or maybe I’ve opened up
a door to another avenue I can explore in my own career and life.
