Hi I’m Candace, and I’m Jacqueline. Welcome to Aisle by Aisle
[Jaqueline] We are taking a trip to the grocery store
to share a few tips we’ve learned about making healthier food and drink choices.
[Candace] In this segment, we are going to talk about
snacks like chips, crackers and other savory treats.
[MUSIC]
[Jaqueline] Snacking has become a national pastime. The
reality is, most of us don’t NEED snacks.
[Candace] Right, Jaqueline. Snacks usually just push
us way over our calorie limit for the day. But, if we choose wisely, snacks can help
us get through our busy days AND stay healthy.
[Candace] If you are going to snack, eat more of the
foods that are missing from your diet anyway -- fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy, whole
grains, and nuts in small portions.
[Jaqueline] Yeah, very few of us are missing out on potato
chips!
[Jacqueline] The challenge is that there are literally
thousands of snack foods on the market. The fact is most of these snacks are alot alike
– high in fat, calories, and salt. So, if you
do buy them, even the healthy ones, don’t eat them very often, and watch your portions.
For crackers and other snacks, follow these tips:
[Jacqueline] Look for granola bars that have 200 or fewer
calories, 5 or fewer grams of sugar per 100 calories, and at least 3 grams of fiber.
Choose low-fat popcorn, but watch the salt Low-salt nuts are great snacks in small amounts
Look for 100% whole grain crackers with few ingredients
Buy only 100% fruit snacks
[Candace] One thing I learned is to check the percent
Daily Value on the label.
[Candace] If a nutrient is 5% or less, that's low; if
it is 20% or more, that's high. So look for snacks that are low in fat and
sodium, and high in vitamins and fiber. Sugar doesn’t have a percent Daily Value, so look
at the ingredient list and make sure sugar isn’t one
of the first three ingredients.
[Jacqueline] The easiest thing is to snack on fruit, or
some fresh veggies.
[Candace] We hope this trip through the grocery store
was informative for you.
[Jaqueline] It was for us!
