Hi and welcome to my first video
in a series of videos covering the gameplay of MMOs
I hope these will be useful tools for people as they decide
what games they want to spend their time and money playing.
As you can see the first game that I'm going to take a look at is
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Specifically I'm going to be going over character creation
and some of the decisions that are involved in it.
The first decision to be made is whether you want to support the
Galactic Republic or the Sith Empire in their struggle for galactic dominance.
The Galactic Republic going to be mostly focused on doing all the
standard good guy choices, and the Sith Empire is going to be
definitely a power struggle no matter which class you choose.
The choices are pretty different as you can see... or as I'll be showing
There are different classes for each faction
and both of these factions have completely different story lines.
For the Republic, you have the Jedi Knights.... ok....
And the Jedi Consular.... ah, this is slow...
and the Smuggler...
and the trooper.
So, the biggest choice involved in selecting a character is going to
be figuring out what you really want to do.
To help that choice you can click on the "Advanced Classes" button
at the top here. This will discuss the various roles that the class can perform.
For example the Trooper, at level 10, chooses a specialization as either a Commando or a Vanguard
And this outlines what the class is going to be like.
The Commando uses an assault cannon and will be either a healer or a damage dealer.
and wears heavy armor, whereas the Vanguard is going to be a tank or a damage dealer
and wield a blaster rifle and wear heavy armor.
The smuggler is going to be either a Gunslinger or a Scounderal
dealing mostly damage as a Gunslinger armed with 2 blaster pistols, wearing medium armor
or a healer or damage dealer with a blaster pistol and a scatter gun as a Scoundrel
The Jedi Consular is going to be a healer or a damage dealer with a single light saber as a Jedi Sage
Or a tank or damage dealer with a double-bladed light saber as a Jedi Shadow.
Both of these will be wearing light armor.
And the Jedi Knight is going to either be a Tank or damage dealer using a single lightsaber for a Jedi Guardian
or a dual-wielding damage dealer wearing medium armor as a Jedi Sentinal
So these are the Republic classes. Lets go back to look at the SIth Empire's classes.
The Sith Empire obviously has a little bit of a darker feel to it.
The classes here... these are all going to be essentially the same as the classes available to the Republic side
they just have a different flavor.
The Sith Warrior is going to be essentially the same as the Jedi Knight.
As you can see, either a dual-weilder or a single light saber.
The Sith Inquisitor... is going to be the same as the Jedi Consular
The Bounty Hunter is going to be kind of a combination of the Smuggler and the Trooper.
The bounty hunters use blaster pistols but they have most of the same skills as the trooper.
and the Imperial Agent is going to use Sniper Rifles or a blaster rifle but otherwise they'll be the same as a Smuggler.
So for the purpose of this tutorial, I'm going to create
a Jedi Knight.
Now the Jedi Knight... the only reason I'm choosing the Jedi Knight is because they go
a little bit quicker so when I'm showing gameplay we can move
through the game a little faster than... say.. a Jedi Consular
or most of the Sith classes. This was done on purpose by the game designers
because some people like to just move into a game
and quickly move through the content and so that's essentially what the Jedi Knight is for.
Whereas some people enjoy the series "The Knights of the Old Republic" which is
gave rise to the Jedi Consular story line which is a little bit longer, a little more involved story
So at this point you can choose between any of the various races available to you
At the beginning you're only going to have these basic races unlocked.
Each class has a different set of races available.
Basic races available to the Jedi Knight are the Human. the Miraluka,
the Twi'lek
The Zabrak
and the Mirialan
There is not a whole lot of difference as far as gameplay goes
between each of the races. Each one has a different social ability
That doesn't necessarily affect gameplay but adds a little bit of flavor.
These locked races here are only available if you create a character and level
them up to level 50 and that character is of that race.
You can also. if you have way too much money in your high level character
you can spend two or three million credits to unlock those races.
So essentially if you created a Sith Pureblood character and leveled them up to level 50
Then you could come back over to the light side (Republic) and create a light side (Republic) Pureblood SIth.
I'm going to select Human.
Bryan: And male Jedi Knight: I will face down all darkness in the galaxy!
There's a lot of customization options. The biggest difference between
this game and most MMOs is going to be especially the body type.
The body type.. I think there are 4 different body types here
and as you can see they provide a huge range of shapes and heights
for your character so not everybody is going to be the same shape and size
There are a ton of different options for customization. I'm going to go ahead and create a character
that looks somewhat like me.
You can add scars or whatever to make your character look uglier
And you can change your complexion to create a little more feeling of
darkness for your character
You can change the eye color
and there's a nice hefty selection of beards here for you.
And a decent amount of hairs to choose from as well.
Over to the hair color
And the skin color. I'll give my character a nice LCD tan here.
Alright, next you just name your character and hit play.
Now each of the different base classes are going to have a completely different story line
so it's definitely worth creating one of each of the 8
classes in order to experience the whole story
Choosing an advanced class at level 10 doesn't really
alter your base story at all, but it does radically change
the skills that are available to you
Alright, and now the game starts off just like any good Star Wars movie would
Spoilers! I can't tell you all that! You're going to have to play the game to find out
what's going on.
Each class is treated to a different intro movie and a different
intro scene. And there are two different starting locations
for the classes. Two for the republic and two for the Empire.
So your class will play through an entire location first and then join
everybody else right around level 10.
One of the features of this game that sets it apart from others
is the story driven nature. There's a lot of voice acting in this game and a lot of cut scenes.
so rarely ever will you get a mission that's just kinda like okay, go over here and kill
ten of these just because we say so.
they're going to give at least a little bit of story line to it.
[Game subtitles are not on by default. They can be turned on in the options menu]
Ok and this is a conversation. The game is made up of quite a few
Conversations. It gives you a few options on how to respond
a lot of times these options will branch you off into different parts of the conversation
and give you different results.
For the most part the first option or the number one option
is going to be the option most good people take
and number three is going to be for jerks
and number two is going to be somewhere in between.
Alright, so now we have our first mission and I'm going to leave it there
and we'll pick up on our next video as we begin helping the padawans.
