Meet Toshi. Toshi lives with his parents in Tokyo.
Theres Toshi, talking to his dad. Toshis dad is in New York, on business.
OK Toshi, time for bed, says Yuki, his mom.
Mom, its bed time here. But in New York, it is early in the morning.
How is this possible?
Yuki smiles and looks at the clock. We have some time she says.
Lets look at the globe we have in the study.
Hurrah said Toshi, not really wanting to sleep so early.
Lets first find Tokyo on the Globe, Toshi. Ok, here's Japan, and here, is Tokyo.
Now let us search for New York. Turn the globe a bit Toshi.
Turn- Turn-Turn. Stop. Thank you. So heres America and here
in this corner is New York.
Gee Mom, America and Japan are so far from each other.
Well done Toshi. This is an important point says Yuki.
Now let us switch on this study lamp and point it towards the globe.
Toshi, could you please point the lamp towards Japan.
Sure mother, said Toshi.
What do you notice about Tokyo and New York Toshi?
Mom, Tokyo is getting light from the lamp but not New York.
Correct Toshi. Now, the lamp is like the sun, shining brightly and causing daylight.
Now spin the globe a bit Toshi.
Which way mom said Toshi. Good point again, said Yuki.
Well Toshi, notice the axis on this globe. The axis allows the globe to spin.
Similarly the Earth has an axis too but this axis cannot be seen.
Cool, said Toshi.
The earth spins on this axis from West to East.
And the earth takes A FULL DAY for a complete rotation.
So slowly spin the globe from West to East Toshi till New York is facing the lamp.
Now what do you see?
Now New York is getting all the light but not Tokyo.
Gee mom, its making sense now. But one more question - Is the sun smaller
than the earth? This lamp is SMALL.
Yuki laughs. No Toshi, the earth is MUCH MUCH SMALLER than the sun.
Thanks Mom. I have learnt something new today.
Its a pleasure Toshi. All you have to do is ask.
Thank You.
