\pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Hello. My name is Jason and I would like to
welcome you to the second in a series of screencast introducing key aspects of the Open Folklore
portal site. \f1 \
\
\f0 Open Folklore is a project of the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries and the American
Folklore Society. \f1 \
\
\f0 Its goal is to promote open access to scholarship in the field of folklore studies.
The Open Folklore Portal Site located at www dot open folklore dot org is one means towards
this end. \f1 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 OPEN TAB WITH OF SCREENCAST #1\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ In the first Open Folklore screencast, we
looked at how to use the search tool available at the Open Folklore portal.
\f1 \ \
\f0 In this new episode we will very quickly look at how to discover and access important
open access folklore journals whose content is not yet discoverable using Open Folklore
Search. \f1 \
\
\f0 The place to begin is at the OF portal site, which is located at www dot open folklore
dot org \f1 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 [go to OF site]\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Arriving at the OF portal site, we could (as
was shown in the last episode) consult the OF Search Tool as a way of directly discovering
and accessing a wide range of freely available articles and reviews relating to folklore
and its study, worldwide. \f1 \
\
\f0 For purposes of today's screencast it is important to note that not all Open Access
journal content in folklore studies is yet available via OF search.
\f1 \ \
\f0 Before accessing such material in a different way, I want to briefly explain why this is
so. \f1 \
\
\f0 By their very nature, all Open Access journals make their content freely available
online to all interested users who are able to get access to the internet. The difference
of relevance here is that some journals do so using technical protocols that facilitate
the gathering of searchable data on these publications by projects such as Open Folklore.
\f1 \ \
\f0 Such gathering of basic information about an item published in a journal is called \'93metadata
harvesting.\'94 \f1 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Go to an open tab with JEF homepage.\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Some open access journals in folklore studies,
including the \i Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics
\i0 , published by the Estonian National Museum, the Estonian Literary Museum and the University
of Tartu, are published using software tools that allow for such harvesting. These are
the journals whose content can be directly discovered and accessed via OF search.
\f1 \ \
\f0 Other key journals are not yet using software tools that allow for such harvesting.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Go to an open tab with CA homepage.\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ A key OA journal in folklore studies belonging
to this group is \i Cultural Analysis
\i0 , published by an collective of international folklorists in partnership with SIEF, the
International Society for Ethnology and Folklore. \f1 \
\
\f0 No folklorist would want to miss out on the key content being published in Cultural
Analysis or in other OA folklore journals. How do scholars learn about and access such
journals? \f1 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Go back to the OF portal. \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f1\b0 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 Arriving back at the OF portal site and wanting to learn more about the OA journals
active in the field of folklore studies we go not to the search page, but to the journals
link at the top of every page on the portal site.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Go back to the OF journals tab. \
\pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ On this simple webpage, OF visitors can get
an introduction to the field's journal literature and discover a range of open access publications.
\f1 \ \
\f0 These titles are presented in a series of groups.
\f1 \ \
\f0 After providing names and links to a few key non-open access titles that we did not
want new-comers to the field to be unaware of, the open access journal tables begin with
a group of titles that are currently being published in fully open access ways.
\f1 \ \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Scroll down to first OA group.\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ As presented here, users can discover and
link-out to many titles, both those that are also accessible via Open Folklore search (like
the \i Journal of Ethnology and Folklore
\i0 ) and those (like \i Cultural Analysis
\i0 ), that are not. \f1 \
\f0 \ As an example, clicking on the link for
\i Oral Tradition \i0 takes us directly to the Oral Tradition
site... \ \
\pard\pardeftab709
\b \cf0 CLICK ON ORAL TRADITION \ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \'85 \f0 .where we can access works published in
that journal. \f1 \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\b \cf0 CLICK BACK TO OF PORTAL\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f1\b0 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 This first table is an encouraging sign of how much effort folklorists are collectively
investing in making folklore scholarship freely and easily available to all.
\f1 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 \ Scroll down to second OA group.
\f1\b0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 \ If we scroll down to the next table, we come
to a group of titles for which historical or legacy journal content is being made available
freely online. These are important journals with rich backfiles of content.
\f1 \ \
\f0 This material is being made available online in several ways and thus the links
available on the OF portal lead out to a number of different digital collections and repositories.
\f1 \ \
\f0 To take one example, we can click on the link for the
\i Folklore and Folk Music Archivist. \f1\i0 \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 \ Click on Folklore and Folk Music Archivist.
\f1\b0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\i \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\i0 \cf0 Doing so takes us to the journal as it is being made available on the IUScholarWorks
Repository site. Here we can browse issues as well as perform full text searches.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Click back to OF\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Going back to the OF journal list, we could
instead click on the \i Jewish Folklore and Ethnology Review
\i0 link. \f1 \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 \ Click on the Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
Review link. \f1\b0 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 Doing so takes us to the location where the journal has been archived as part
of the HathiTrust Digital Library. Here we can browse full text volumes of the journal.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Click back to OF\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ As with the
\i Folklore and Folk Music Archivist \i0 ,
\i Jewish Folklore and Ethnology Review \i0 and other titles in this group have been
made full accessible because the copyright holding organization has granted permission
to make this content freely available to the field and to the general public.
\f1 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 We have one more stop to make on the OF journals page.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\b \cf0 \ Scroll to the Bottom
\f1\b0 \ \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 If you would like to be alerted to when new journals are added to the OF journals
list, one way to do this is to subscribe to the \'93new journals feed.\'94 This is easy
and can be done by clicking the little orange icon at the bottom of the page.\
\pard\pardeftab709
\f1 \cf0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0 \cf0 This involves a technology called RSS feeds. RSS stands for \'93Real Simple
Syndication\'94. If you would like to know more about such using such feeds, I would
suggest watching the You Tube Video titled \'93RSS in Plain English.\'94
\f1 \ \
\pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 Open TAB with Common Craft RSS Video Open\
\pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Produced by an organization called Common
Craft, it is a lot more fun than my screencast and it does a great job of explaining RSS
feeds in an accessible way. \f1 \
\f0 \ \pard\pardeftab709
\b \cf0 GO BACK TO OF PORTAL HOME PAGE\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ Thank you for taking this tour Open Folklore
journal resources. \f1 \
\ \pard\pardeftab709
\f0\b \cf0 OF Slide\ \pard\pardeftab709
\b0 \cf0 \ If you would like to learn more about the
Open Folklore project in general, I invite you to visit the portal site at www dot open
folklore dot org and to check out the overview video available on YouTube. For the video,
just go to You Tune and search the phrase \'93Open Folklore.\'94
\f1 \ \
\f0 On behalf of the Open Folklore project team, the American Folklore Society, and the
Indiana University Bloomington Libraries, thank you for your interest in the field of
folklore studies and for your support of the Open Folklore project.
