now it's time for our daily update in the arts and culture department. good afternoon
yoonhee. i hear you have more of a traditional piece for us today.
that's right. so yesterday we saw a hand ballet ...a bit of a more contemporary piece of work
...and today i have for you a legend in traditional korean dance. he's been in the business for
50 years and is very passionate about the future of korean dance. let's see what guk
su-ho has been up
to.
package designated as an important intangible cultural
asset since 1969 seungmu is one of the oldest and most recognizable traditional korean dance
s.
guk su-ho has been a seungmu dancer for 50 years now. starting at the young age of 16
he's been performing on stages around the country ever since showing off the experiences
he's gained by traveling the globe.
korean as i traveled around the world going to over
130 different countries i thought about how i could perform seungmu . i've spent the last
50 years gaining experiences so that i can create themes and ideas for this dance.
even though it was hard to make a living guk su-ho decided to become the first male dancer
to use dance and his choreography as a sole source of income.
to preserve the future of korean dance he's combined its traditions with a newly designed
stage.
korean it's unbelievable that korea doesn't have
a stage made solely for this traditional korean dance. i've waited 10 years for this moment
and have been preparing this stage for a very long time.
to ensure that future generations inherit and keep this korean cultural heritage alive
it must be preserved and developed by dancers such as guk su-ho.
he's devoted his entire life to seungmu ,... and all he asks in return is for korea to show
its love and support for the traditional dance .
korean in korea music sounds and dance are not just
a luxury. for the korean people they are an indespensible part of life that must be consu
med to feed the spirit.
