Hi. I’m Hyojin An from TalkToMeInKorean.
Hello, I’m Kyung-hwa Sun.
We have a new book out.
That’s right. It’s so pretty.
It is, right? / Yes.
This is an idioms book.
We’ve gathered 100 idioms or expressions that are used commonly in Korea.
Among the TalkToMeInKorean video lessons, we have Catch The Wave.
That’s right.
What is it about?
On the radio, there’s a program called Catch The Wave, and Hyunwoo and Adrien always introduce Korean idiomatic expressions.
Yes. We’ve chosen some expressions introduced on that show, and some more that we’ve chosen.
We’ve chosen some more… about 40-50 more expressions, so a total of 100 expressions for this book.
If you look at the book, first of all, it’s pretty.
Yes, it’s pretty.
It’s important for us.
That’s right. It has to be pretty to make people want to buy it.
That’s right. The design of the book is pretty, and there are many illustrations in the book.
Very pretty. Pretty and original.
That’s right.
And what other characteristics are there?
These drawings are in fact, just like the idiomatic expressions,
I mean, they are drawn in a way that they describe the expressions literally, so it’s funny.
So after studying with this, you’ll be able to understand why they are funny.
And I think there might be people who think, since this is an idioms book, that it must be difficult for them since they are a beginner.
I think people of all levels can use this book.
Yes.
Yes, it’s because with this book, you could study from the first expression and learn what word means what and what idiom means what,
you can just open anywhere. / you can open any page,
you can learn which word means what and how a certain expression is used, and study in a fun and light way.
You can use it like a reference book.
They are not difficult idioms, and all the explanations are in English
they are not explained in Korean but in English, so you can understand them easily.
In each chapter, there is an expression like this, and the words are explained so you can learn new words,
and then if you look here, there are literal meanings.
You can see the literal meaning and the actual meaning at one glance.
And on the next, it’s explained more details.
So it explains in detail why this expression has this meaning and in what kind of situation it is used.
And it will be easy to understand because there are sample dialogs.
Yeah, you can see in what kind of situation it is used in.
And like they were introduced here earlier, “발목 잡다” “동네북” - they are short, right? / They are short.
They are not long expressions.
And we’ve gathered expressions used frequently by Koreans,
when you’re talking with a friend, you know,
when I was studying English, when someone was speaking, I was sure I knew the words
but I didn’t understand what he was saying.
Yes, that happens often.
In such cases, you can study with this book and understand. “Oh that’s what they meant.”
Yes. “잘난 척 하다”
We know someone who brags…
His last name is Sun.
Here…
He’s on this book band…
I actually really like this drawing. I don’t know if you can see it.
It’s so funny because this guy is not wearing pants,
and he’s sticking his head into where there’s ice.
Why is he sticking his head into the refrigerator?
The expression is “머리를 식히다” and when you say “머리를 식히다”
nobody would actually put their head in the fridge.
The meanings are all introduced in the book.
And a drawing that I like is, I really laughed out loud on this one,
The expression is “손꼽아 기다리다” and the person actually put a finger through a calendar.
The finger is here like this.
You are waiting with your finger stuck in the calendar.
And if you look at the book, like I said earlier, there are 100 expressions, I think you’ve got most of the most common ones.
In fact some of these expressions are old proverbs and some are recently made slang words.
And I like this word “딸바보”. Where is it? / 딸바보.
In Chapter 58, there’s the word 딸바보. And you’ll see what it means if you read that page.
I really like this word.
And in Chapter 51, there’s 품절남 and 품절녀.
These are also recently made slang words.
Well then everyone, this is our idioms book, Everyday Korean Idiomatic Expressions.
It’s a very strong title. / That’s right.
