Hello. I'm
Dr. Michael Kelly. I am the director of the Cancer Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin
and associate professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Our approach is an interdisciplinary team approach in the care of patients
with different types of childhood cancers. All of those patients have
unique needs and require different types of therapies
and what we've developed is a team of experts that help take care
of those unique needs
while we are trying to understand
and develop new therapies in order to improve outcomes for the future.
When I first meet parents it's often in the
most distressing period of their lives.
Kids are often very anxious and parents are even more so.
And, really delivering news in an order that they can understand, that there is a great
deal of hope
for their child
to be cured of this cancer, understanding the types of therapies
that will be involved
in curing their child
and understanding that there's a whole group of
people with varying expertise that's going to help, not only the child, but the
family through
this process. That's what keeps me coming to work every day,
and that's what keeps my team generating new ideas and new therapies in
order to offer our patients and our families the best opportunities
possible.
