(Male narrator): April 2012 and painters have begun restoring City Hall’s original 1920s colour schemes
which consisted of mostly lighter shades to suit Brisbane’s warm climate.
The real highlight is watching the gold leaf being applied to the stunning features high up above the Main Auditorium.
That’s where we met Wayne who showed us a thing or two about the beautiful art of gilding.
(Wayne): I’m just applying the size. This is the first step to apply the gilding or the gold leaf that will complete the work here.
Size is like a glue; where I put this product, the gold leaf sticks to it.
I’m using gold leaf here on this project because originally that’s what they would have done.
Gold leaf is far more vibrant, lustrous and will stay as is for another hundred years
and it’s much better than using a gold paint, for example.
It’s extremely labour-intensive as you’ll see, it takes quite a while to apply but the end result is definitely worthwhile.
(Male narrator): And what does it feel like to be working on such an historic restoration?
(Wayne): I’ve been in Brisbane last twenty years. I’m very proud to be working on this refurbishment.
